Rob Arthur's portrait of Thelonious Monk exemplifies the jazz greats' music; discordant elements combine to create a cohesive whole. Dominant blues and reds are cacophonous but the picture is sonorous. When we see it, it is as though we are seeing Monks' songs where, as Arthur describes, opposites combine in free, expressive leaps, absent of boundaries. To achieve this, he poured paint onto the page, letting it bleed together in some areas, masking to prevent it from overflowing into others.

We've all been there. It is 11:15 at the music club, and the band you have been excited to see for months still has not taken the stage. Show time said 9:00 but you have yet to hear any music. You give a big yawn, and look at your watch again. Nothing.

Wouldn't you rather see and hear a band that follows that formula, versus one that sounds no different live than the CD you just purchased at Wal-Mart a month ago? Again, it all comes down to staying power. Do you really think people will still be talking about Of Montreal, Fall Out Boy, and Panic At The Disco twenty years from now? No one will be talking about how innovative or lasting their music was, is, or will ever be. There are no Zeppelins, Zappas, or Zevons in this mix and that is be

"Alex Grey's painting, 'Net of Being,' has been introduced to millions of people by the rock band TOOL. After years of labor this epic work is now on view along with numerous new artworks depicting Grey’s mystic visions and an architectural model of the future Chapel of Sacred Mirrors." In addition to that wall sized painting; nineteen other new works were on display.

Tattoos are more prevalent now than they have been at any time in American history. An estimated 39 million or one out of every seven people in North America has at least one tattoo, according to en.Wikipedia.org. Once considered taboo because of their associations with criminality, tattoos have become a main stream trend.

The roads from design to merchandising for each store could not be farther apart. While the Gap and other clothing companies contract their manufacturing to factories around the world, American Apparel lives up to its name by manufacturing all of its clothing in Los Angeles, Calif.

8am. The subways are moving still, now weighted down by commuters, my bodies pressed hard up against the closing doors. Back at the office a transactions has been made and he appears in computers memory, a glitch in the space. He talks about his time, but at that time I am still caught in the body march, still in a tunnel underground walking from the L train to the uptown local train under sixth avenue. I’m not sure what now he speaks of or how slow the conversion is, where the M34 is in rela

A suburban nation can be defined as a population of beings lying within commuting distance of a central urbanality. Usually, but not always, suburbs are the aloof wanderers economically and culturally outside the limits of central cities; usually, but not always, they are the unconquerable labyrinths of the cities potentiality.

During the winter of 1973 Connecticut’s railway stations were shut down along with the highways and bridges. It rained all day and when the sun set, everything froze. Parking lots mirrored images, passengers sat stuck in train cars commuting back from New York, trucks in ditches off the sides of the road. -- Emily Crocker

On my personal journey I've come tothe conclusion that what is most important is to be continually open to whatever lessons life has to offer, to respond thoughtfully and compassionately, andto have an open heart. Everything else seems superfluous. Because much of what I did or did not do in my younger years was either for the reward of Heaven or to avoid the consequence of Hell, my actions were for appearances' sake and little else. I feel that I'm now living and striving to live a more a

I am not trying to discourage anyone from joining the military. I hope that those who read this will be better equipped when they do face the recruiter. Its no secret that the military is desperate for folks to join right now. If this is your calling, please pursue it, but be mindful of what you are promised. I hope that one day the military will relax their standards so people in my situation can join of free conscious.

Back to life, back to reality. It’s always like that after a vacation, but coming home after a week at Burning Man is a wee bit different. I returned to my 9-5 job to wiggle my way through the inevitable question “where did you go on your vacation?”. To some it was “a roadtrip with my girlfriends”, to others “camping in the desert”, and to a few I would admit my real destination, only to be asked “what’s Bernie man?”.

Sabine Kuegler, daughter of a German couple, is born in Nepal in 1972. She has one sister, Judith, and one brother, Christian. Her father is a linguist; her mother a missionary. When Sabine is five years old, the whole family moves to West Papua (Indonesia) to live with the Fayu, a violent tribe which even today lives as if it were the Stone Age.

Maho began as a handful of tent cottages, and over the last twenty-nine years has grown into one of the world’s greatest examples of sustainable building. Unfortunately, the land that Maho occupies is leased and there is a strong incentive economically to develop the land. Now hear this: the lease expires January 31, 2012, and Maho could very well lose out to the principles that it does not hold itself up to and could one day become a mega-resort. If you plan on going to Maho, GO NOW.

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have always gone out of their way to skewer the self-serious and people like Michael Moore, Barbara Streisand and Alec Baldwin aren't exactly moving targets, but to suggest that the show has a conservative, or at least an anti-liberal bent is ludicrous.

Everybody who stayed on earth the last couple of weeks (I think most of you did), Christian or no Christian, does know pope John Paul II deceased. Although it is the second time a pope dies since I’m alive, it is the first time I experienced it consciously. That is why I want to write something about it, even though I am not a real Christian.

Belgium is no exception as regards taking initiatives to collect money for South-East Asia, which has been hit by a tsunami on December 26 last year.At the end of February this year, I was present at a concert in Antwerp (Sportpaleis): “12-12 The Concert”. It was called that way since in Belgium people can deposit money at bank account “000-0000012-12” to support South-East Asia.

Brazilians are indeed very happy and friendly people, who like to party like there’s no tomorrow, and who, for the most part, have a very positive and spontaneous way about them, finding pleasure in simple things, and enjoying life regardless of what their social and financial situation might be…Therefore, If you ever feel like experiencing Brazil and getting to understand a little bit about its people, I recommend you drop by for Carnaval sometime. I will watch as some of my friends’ desires for marriage become hopeless fantasies, as civil liberties are stripped away from them and the constitution. I will watch as others struggle with life altering decisions that they will not legally be allowed to make. I will watch my nephews grow up in a country where one half of the populace believes the only civil liberty worth protecting is the right to bear arms, while my nephews’ peers shoot themselves and each other with this precious right. If you could get the two together in any sort of a civilized fashion at all, you just might come up with something totally unexpected. That's what's so exciting about it." He pointed a finger at me. The first night (8/10) was really nice. We had outstanding weather, and the crowd was mellow. As always there was lots of fun to be had in the parking lot and on the lawn. I like PNC--the people who work there aren't total JERKS like many people at Jones Beach. On the way into the show we saw some interesting things..

The change in seasons here is as abrupt as elsewhere in Africa, from last month bone dry and blazing forest, field and brush fires all around, adding smoke to the already dusty air and to now flash flood downpour every afternoon, usually clearing off to a cool crisp evening and a fresh sky of sparkling stars.

Apparently links have been found between the diamond and tanzanite mining companies in Kenya with Al Qaeda, and the British and American governments are making a big deal out of it. People who I have talked to from Kenya think this is all totally absurd, and are pleading for the ban to be lifted because, as one of them said, "the tourism industry has been brought to its knees."

There are a few Muslims around in this part of the country, but they do not at all appear to be threatening. The only adverse attitudes we volunteers have encountered is the occassional "Osama!" shouted out at us from little boys, usually only in the bigger cities.
