  • Railroad Earth
    With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

    The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

    Armed with new jungle juice, they are warming up and ready to play. They opened up with a latenight show in Atlanta and continued on to Mountain View Jam Festival in North Carolina. Coast to coast, they'll be working their way to SummerCamp, Wakarusa, and High Sierra Music Festival.

    Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."

  • Curious Yellow (August 2003)
    After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

New Monsoon absorbs elements of sound indigenous to world culture and incorporates them into a variety of colorful and original rhythmic compositions.

    I’m blessed to have a solid group of friends who love live music, generally as much as me. There is little in life I find more enjoyable than watching close friends I’ve taken to a new group or artist turn and give me that look of excitement and say “Wow, you were right! These guys are amazing!” This look and this line happened more than a handful of times at the latest New Mastersounds show at the Fox Theater up on the good old Hill in Boulder, CO. “I know, I told you so!” was all I could quip back, with a grin.

    Last week while reviewing the Backwoods Pondfest, I was fortunate enough to meet and talk to some of the members of the Rutland, VT band Twiddle. Based entirely on my ability to speak with some eloquence about their music, and my wife’s propensity to take phenomenal pictures, Matt, Twiddle’s manager, invited us to attend their show the following week at The Higher Ground in South Burlington, VT. Having seen the bands strengths and potential at Backwoods Pondfest, we accepted the invitation and took the short ferry ride over from Essex this past Friday night.

Alternative, progressive, pop, punk, funk, fusion, indie, etc., etc. Then there are bands like My Morning Jacket, who are none of the above.

    The Pennsylvania Campaign for Change has just announced a Monday, October 13 concert fundraiser to benefit Obama for America featuring many Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees and other American music icons. Additionally, the show will be a very large voter outreach opportunity for the Pennsylvania Obama campaign, which has already built the largest volunteer-based campaign in Pennsylvania’s history. The campaign has more than 70 field offices and thousands of volunteers preparing for an unprecedented Get Out the Vote operation. There are now more than 1 million more Democrats in the state than Republicans, an increase of 500,000 since 2004.

Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

As it would turn out, the change up was so that the band wouldn’t have to pause in the middle of Zeppelin II to play Auld Lang Syne, release the balloons, and watch the happy couples make out on the dance floor. Good thing too, because once these guys got going, there was no stopping them.

  • Marco Benevento Announces West Coast Tour Dates
    The Los Angeles Times recently selected Marco Benevento as a "2009 Artist To Watch" in anticipation of Me Not Me. The ten track collection finds Benevento interpreting the work of artists such as Deerhoof, Leonard Cohen, George Harrison and My Morning Jacket among others. Benevento also contributes three original compositions, including "Now They're Writing Music," which was first performed as a rough sketch last spring when the Brooklyn-based pianist appeared on "The World Cafe With David Dye." In addition to Benevento, the album features the aforementioned Mathis and Barr along with drummer Matt Chamberlain. The set was recorded in Seattle at Chroma Sound and mixed in Brooklyn by Bryce Goggin.

    Phish will perform ten concerts this coming June. The shows kick off with a two night stand at Jones Beach in Wantagh, NY June 4-5 and wrap up at Alpine Valley in East Troy, WI on June 20-21. Stops along the way include a return to the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis on June 16 and the band's first show at the Asheville Civic Center in Asheville, NC on June 9

Umphrey's McGee released Jimmy Stewart 2007 this past June.  This digital-only release features the band's best improvisations of the past year.  Jimmy Stewart 2007 is a limited edition release, first available at the Bonnaroo Music Festival and thereafter available digitally through UMLive.net and iTunes.  Plus, the UM download will offer up a companion podcast with an additional 70 minutes of material that did not make the Jimmy Stewart 2007 album.

Jimmy Stewart 2007 is an ambitious effort to compile a year's worth of the band's inspired improvisations into two seamless 70-minute "mixtapes."  At over 100 shows a year, Umphrey's McGee delves into these spontaneous compositions, engaging their fans as they feed off each other's energy.  A Zappa-inspired language of body gestures and hand-signals allow the band to break structure while creating an entirely new arrangement.  As Umphrey's McGee continues to evolve, each live performance showcases the band's "Jimmy Stewart" approach to structured improvisation. 

Also, Umphrey's McGee released a digital-only live series titled CompendiUM.  Available through iTunes and UMLive.net, CompendiUM offers live recordings of the band's favorite ten shows of 2007.  Included in the series are the band's Boulder, Colorado show from March 6th, their Portland, Oregon show on June 7th, and the Chicago show from December 30th, among others.
