Woah, is it finally September? I’ve been anxiously, and not always patiently, waiting for September since oh March when tickets for Sound Tribe Sector 9’s Colorado Fall run of shows went on sale. First, if you don’t have tickets for any of these shows, first slap yourself, and then get your freaking tickets! Less than a week here folks, okay and do you really want all of them to sell out and you have to wait outside with your finger in the air? HELL NO!

  • Railroad Earth
    With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

    The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

    Armed with new jungle juice, they are warming up and ready to play. They opened up with a latenight show in Atlanta and continued on to Mountain View Jam Festival in North Carolina. Coast to coast, they'll be working their way to SummerCamp, Wakarusa, and High Sierra Music Festival.

    Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."

  • Curious Yellow (August 2003)
    After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

    A recent favorite in my personal palette of rebel rock is State Radio’s newest album, Year of the Crow. Although not a new record per say (it was released back in February of this year), it deserves to be acknowledged in what is possibly the most important election season of my time. Year of the Crow is a no-holds-barred criticism of everything to do with the current ruling administration, touching on such dare-not-speak-its-name issues as the torture of uncharged political prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, the CIA’s new “right” to spy on its own people, and the idea of America as an Imperial force, and not the gallant freedom fighter some politicians make us out to be. Some people would call such criticisms unpatriotic, but these things need to be said. Our government is only as evil as its people will allow it to be, and ignorance and complacency are the only real treasons in our fine country.

Trey Anastasio touched upon this in his set on the final day of the festival, while explaining how his grandfather made this pilgrimage in 1910 from Italy before playing “Drifting.” Nicole Atkins also remarked about the beautiful location of this festival with clear views of the Statue of Liberty and the New York City skyline. She said, “Look at the view. It’s cool because we’re from New Jersey, and we’re pointing at Lady Liberty’s ass.” The festival’s name originates from the fact that immigrants who came to Ellis Island would go to the Central Railroad of New Jersey terminal, which is located on Liberty State Park, and then hop upon trains labeled “all points west.”

Tempos ballad to brisk, and styles from straight-ahead swing to spiritual solemnity to dance-groove funk to a classically-tinged composition featuring his trio with a symphony orchestra, were appreciated by the attendees at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem’s Visitors Center.

Think three of those on steroids with pieces of fabric stretched amoeba-shaped between them in front of a small stage. An intimate, small-venue experience with the cool artsy atmosphere of rest of the fest perfect for morning yoga and late, late night partying.

Set in Teton Village, at the foot of the Jackson Hole ski resort, and only a stone’s throw away from Grand Teton National Park, I can’t imagine a more beautiful location for a musical weekend. Over the course of two days, ten bands shared a single stage, playing to a crowd of only a few thousand people who danced, drank local Wyoming beer, ate organic pizza, and basked in the fantastic vistas and warm, clear skies.

    The funky, jammy, L.A. based Underground Orchestra proved to be a good start to the music of the weekend before the chaos started. Anthony Rogers-Wright proved to be an entertaining bassist and just one component of this group. Sam Feldman plays the mandolin, which I love, so this group had an instant in. The rest of the guys obviously enjoyed their time @ the Domes together, but those two were my favs of this newly discovered group, both for me and lots of others from the sound of it. Not only did I talk to several people over the course of the weekend that mentioned that these guys were a great new find for them but their Myspace site boasts several comments from converts.

    I woke up in Grand Teton National Park to the sounds of crazy mountain birds, and was glad not to have been eaten by bears or wolves during the night. The festival itself provides no camping but there is plenty to be found in the park and in the surrounding forests. On the drive to the festival grounds, I saw a moose, and nearly 30 people taking a picture of it. There was a lot to look forward to, and anyway I’ve seen moose before, so I didn’t stop until I hit Teton Village.

  • National Jazz Museum in Harlem September Schedule
    John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, a 32 minute suite made in 1964 based on a four note motif on the words “A Love Supreme,” has become a holy relic of jazz. Similar in intent to Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts, the suite was Coltrane’s musical gift to God. From the urgent speech-like timbre of his tenor, to the serpentine textures and earthy groove of Elvin Jones's drumming, Coltrane's suite proceeds with escalating intensity, conveying a beckoning serenity in the prayer-like drones of "Psalm," where Jones rolls and rumbles like thunder as Garrison and Tyner toll away suggestively.

    John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, a 32 minute suite made in 1964 based on a four note motif on the words “A Love Supreme,” has become a holy relic of jazz. Similar in intent to Duke Ellington’s Sacred Concerts, the suite was Coltrane’s musical gift to God. From the urgent speech-like timbre of his tenor, to the serpentine textures and earthy groove of Elvin Jones's drumming, Coltrane's suite proceeds with escalating intensity, conveying a beckoning serenity in the prayer-like drones of "Psalm," where Jones rolls and rumbles like thunder as Garrison and Tyner toll away suggestively.

Most of the samples sounded as if he were doing what I know to be a sort of tabla language. And as always Jason Hahn is just a machine! Albeit machine that constantly finds smiles and laughs onstage.

    On Labor Day, coming off an opening gig for Gov’t Mule at Red Rocks, Umphrey’s played a solo show at the Fox Theatre in Boulder, CO. It was a special all-acoustic show, and the band was in good form. Relaxed and still glowing from the night before, Umphrey’s McGee made themselves right at home at the Fox Theatre, with their personal mini-bar set up on stage, comprised of vodka, ice, orange juice, beer and several other items. It was time to kick back.

    Rightmire’s harmonica is almost certainly the band’s most exciting feature. It functions like a mouth-operated synthesizer, electrified, and run through a huge board of pedals. At times it sounds like a DJ scratch kit, at others it sounds like something from outer space. Sometimes it sounds like a regular harmonica. Rightmire’s epic lung capacity allows him to jam out on the mouth harp with incredible longevity. Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

    Chicago’s favorite export is coming to Colorado, and I’m not talking about either crooked politicians or Da Bears. I’m talking about Umphrey’s McGee, who will be doing a four-night stint along the Front Range later this month, beginning at the Aggie in Fort Collins on the 22nd. From there, UM will be stopping at the Boulder Theater on the 23rd, with back to back gigs in Denver at the Fillmore and Cervantes on the 24th, and a show in Breckenridge on the 25th.

But when the band opened up with Trans Am, an original track off the band’s latest, Moon is the New Earth, the crowd didn’t know what to think. As it would turn out, the change up was so that the band wouldn’t have to pause in the middle of Zeppelin II to play Auld Lang Syne, release the balloons, and watch the happy couples make out on the dance floor. Good thing too, because once these guys got going, there was no stopping them.

Woah, is it finally September? I’ve been anxiously, and not always patiently, waiting for September since oh March when tickets for Sound Tribe Sector 9’s Colorado Fall run of shows went on sale. First, if you don’t have tickets for any of these shows, first slap yourself, and then get your freaking tickets! Less than a week here folks, okay and do you really want all of them to sell out and you have to wait outside with your finger in the air? HELL NO!

Wednesday night at the B Side Lounge, formerly Trilogy, in Boulder is Sacred Science with Jantsen and Alala.One. The cost for the show is $12.75 and it is for those of the legal drinking age. (Sorry freshmen)

 

The Lowdown, a place for STS9 fans to gather on the internet, which is in my opinion a better version of any Phantasy Tour site, is having an unofficial meet and greet this night. I’ve found that although, at times, some of the STS9 community can have an air of let’s say righteousness or reluctance in their attitude towards new fans, most if not all are really amazing people who have a great feel for what STS9 is trying to accomplish through their music. Thursday the real party begins! Sound Tribe Sector 9 will be headlining a Fan Club show at the Boulder Theater. This is the first time since the historic 5 night run, ending on St. Paddy’s Day 2007, that STS9 has played the Boulder Theater. Tickets are hard to come by but just this week the band released a handful of tickets for this show with all proceeds benefiting one of the many charitable organizations they support, The Solar Knights. Act quickly as there are a few tickets left. Sure, they may cost a little more than if you had bought one back in March, but again remember the proceeds go to charity so you can feel useful buying one!

 

If you are unaware of all the charitable organizations that STS9 supports, I beg you to please take a moment and read over all of them here - http://sts9.com/?cat=12 Although more and more artists are putting intention into supporting good causes, STS9 does much more than most, and usually quietly. (Did you know almost every ticket price you pay for a STS9 show, part of that goes to charity?).

 

Every night of this run if you bring 10 canned goods, or usually $10, to the show, you will receive a free poster from Conscious Alliance, an amazing Boulder based organization. If you bring 25 canned goods you will receive a three panel poster from each of the nights. The posters they provide are generally done by some elite artists from around the world. They are for some treasures and highly collectible artwork.  Please consider supporting Conscious Alliance.

 

Starting at 11:59pm on Thursday is the Late Night show at the Fox Theater. You’ll get not just Boulder’s Pnuma Trio, not just Flying Lotus but as well Eliot Lipp Live featuring Alex and Lane of Pnuma Trio. Let me gush a moment because this lineup is SICK! Lane has quickly worked his way up in my mind as one of the top three live electronica drummers. Recently, at Mishawaka, I was put into a trance while watching Lane. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him, my gaze surely reminiscent of a schoolgirl crush! I just couldn’t bear to look away! Although I feel as if he may be part robot, his motions with his body are pure human and very very fluid.  Now add in Eliot Lipp, and yeah...

 

Friday, after everyone has a chance to sleep in a little, hopefully, kicks off a two night run at the always legendary Red Rocks Ampitheater. Although last year at STS9’s two night Red Rocks run it felt as if more than ½ of the venue was empty, this year I doubt will be the case. This past winter STS9 did sell out BOTH of their Fillmore Auditorium shows, keep that in mind if you are waiting around to grab your Red Rocks tickets. Supporting acts for Friday’s Red Rocks show are Talib Kweli and Flying Lotus.

 

The Gothic Theater, which is home to many old spirits from the past who have chosen to keep the Gothic as their home, is hosting the after show parties each night following Red Rocks. Friday’s after show features Simon Posford performing the music of Shpongle and Hallucinogen, Future Rock doing a special Live PA set and Fort Collins’ own Pretty Lights. Okay okay so now *drumroll please* we can talk about Saturday. First, head down to Red Rocks for STS9 with supporting acts Bassnectar and Ghostland Observatory. That’s a given right? Right! Then, unless you’re brain is seriously too disconnected, you should head over to the Gothic Theater for a special night with Daedulus, and Conspirator, featuring David Murphy (STS9) and Marc and Aron (Disco Biscuits), with special guests. There is a very special act yet to be announced for this show as well. I have no problem being a gossip queen and saying that the rumor on the streets of Boulder is that this COULD turn into a TractorBeam show. Let me just say this, if you have ever enjoyed either a STS9 show or a Disco Biscuits show, go to this one. Even if it does not turn out to be a TractorBeam show, it’s gonna be the heat!
