  • THE NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND
Over the course of a recording and performing career that spans five decades and over 30 albums, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has earned a unique status as one of America's most respected and beloved musical institutions. Since their early days in the vanguard of the '60s country-rock movement, they've consistently drawn from a broad array of influences to make music that's distinctly their own. Along the way, they've scored several hit singles, won countless awards and collaborated with an impressive assortment of contemporaries and legends.

Their music could be the new sound of today or in fifty years, and they may never be repeated.

“We’re developing the band to be how live music once was,” Spookie says. “Like Robert Johnson when the only way to hear him was to do so live. Our kind of music is not only based on radio; it’s kind of an underground thing. And our show takes off from the records, like be-bop, where it’s different every time and we rip wide open some of the sections.”

Their one-night only stop in Denver, camping out of a “crashed-green” tour-bus from 1954, introduced me and my friends to their brand of Heavy Gypsy Folk ‘n’ Roll for the first time. I cringe with understatement to say that I enjoyed Sleepytime. The entire show was like a fast train crashing into a loud symphony.

The bands’ musical influences include: Pat McGee, Dave Matthews, the Doobie Brothers, King’s X, the Eagles, and Peter Gabriel, among many others. Although influenced by a wide range of musicians, the goal of every member of Burning Abigail is to create a sound and musical presence that is one-of-a-kind. The ultimate goal of the members of Burning Abigail is simply to make a strong impression as a high-quality, uniquely original Colorado band.

  • The Chris Bramble Band
With swirling thunder and wisps of sunlight, Chris Bramble Band’s music revels in contradiction, weaving disparate strands into an improbable and yet surprisingly natural musical tapestry. One moment the delicate strains of an Appalachian ballad emanate from the stage, the next a soaring electronic wail. The inspiration remains the same, though: a heart rooted in ancient traditions of spiritual yearning and yet embracing this edgy modern world we find ourselves in, dancing all the while.

  • The New Mastersounds, November 16, 2007 in Denver
Why this four-piece funk band has not literally exploded across the music scene in America like so many WMD's is beyond me, and my only hypothesis can be that like those reclusive targets of Presidential invasion, the damn things are just too hard to find. When they decide to grace the US with their presence, The NMS tend to visit only a handful of locations, saving the bulk of their tour for venues across the pond. Luckily, they have taken to Colorado. Colorado, it seems, is also taking to them.

  • Deadwood Revival
Deadwood's "magnificent vocal blend anchored by Kim's powerful voice and complemented by the softer yet perfect pitch of Jason" (Washington Bluegrass Association) adds emotional depth to every song they sing together... like "peaches and whiskey". Both talented songwriters, their original tunes have been described as "old-timey with smokin' hooks". Whether a rockin' hoe down or a tasty ballad, their songs are uplifting, sometimes poignant, and often sound like they could have been written a hundred years ago.

  • Lookout for a Band Named Codename!
On the Thursday of Jam on the River weekend in Philadelphia, there was no better way to kick off the festivities then with a raging show by a new band that has the potential to be a household name in about a year or two. Currently, Codename is flying under the radar mostly at local venues until a couple of the band members finish graduate school. According to their manager, Alex Joffe, brother of guitar player Jon, by the summer of 2009 this band should be touring the country with a heavy dose of experience and songs. I am looking forward to that summer.

  • New Year's Eve Show Marcus Goldhaber W/The Jon Davis Trio
When Marcus was growing up, every night after dinner his mother would call him over to the piano to teach him a new song. She had no great plan to train him professionally, she only wanted him to know this music and have it a part of his life. She would always say, “This is a great one for you to know.”

  • RIBS & BRISKET REVUE New Year's Eve at Cornelia Street
Hard blowing, finger-snapping, klezmer-inflected jazz and wailing big city blues that suddenly slips into Yiddish; Shapiro tips his beret to Slim Gaillard with a couple of his tunes in praise of kosher cuisine, pours soul sauce and reggae beats over Jewish comedy songs and generally rips into things with just the right mix of irreverence and affection... Respect is due to John Zorn's Tzadik label for bringing this unique recording to the world. There really is no one else doing it quite like Shapiro!

Marco Granados and Un Mundo Ensemble perform music from their homeland, Venezuela. Venezuelan music is characterized by fast melodies, complex syncopated rhythms, and jazzy harmonies that blend the traditions of African, European and native cultures with sense of sophistication that is truly unique. A lot of Un Mundo’s arrangements are virtuosic, giving the performers the opportunity to display mastery of their instruments. The different styles performed by the ensemble represent the typical forms most commonly enjoyed by the Venezuelan listener. These styles include: the Joropo, the Merengue, the Tonada, the Gaita, and the Valse (or Waltz).

  • Turbine Rumbles in the Red Fish
Rightmire’s harmonica is almost certainly the band’s most exciting feature. It functions like a mouth-operated synthesizer, electrified, and run through a huge board of pedals. At times it sounds like a DJ scratch kit, at others it sounds like something from outer space. Sometimes it sounds like a regular harmonica. Rightmire’s epic lung capacity allows him to jam out on the mouth harp with incredible longevity. Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

  • New Years Eve: Zeppelin Reborn as Rose Hill Drive
The promise of hearing Zeppelin II was a deal-maker as well, the kind of rock and roll Rose Hill Drive does best. But when the band opened up with Trans Am, an original track off the band’s latest, Moon is the New Earth, the crowd didn’t know what to think. As it would turn out, the change up was so that the band wouldn’t have to pause in the middle of Zeppelin II to play Auld Lang Syne, release the balloons, and watch the happy couples make out on the dance floor. Good thing too, because once these guys got going, there was no stopping them.

STIL (Songs that I Like) is a new original rock band showcasing the music of notorious kelowna musician Jim Le Guilloux. Formed in Jan.'05, this all-star line-up consists of some of kelowna's most talented players.

  • Curtis Savoie (Bass,Vocals)
  • Vytas Sincevicius (keyboards)
  • Dean Morris (drums).

The band was formed to promote Jim's new C.D. titled "SONGS THAT I LIKE".  The first single "Mystery girl" was added to regular rotation on "Kelowna's best rock Power104" and the popular FM radio station co-sponsored the dual C.D. release concert titled

"2 bands 2gether" with fellow indie artists "Ten2nine".

STIL playing music goes without question for Jim. He has played shows as far away as New Zealand and the U.K. while remaining content to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere that the okanagan has to offer. When asked about his most memorable experiences, he speaks fondly of his former band "Who's on Bass?" and their trips to the U.S. and eastern Canada.

Jim can STIL be found playing clubs with his cover band "Vicious Fishes" at Kelowna hotspots like Roses waterfront pub and Whiski-jacks in Westbank.  He enjoys playing cover music and says it keeps his musical edge happening while looking forward to upcoming shows and writing songs with the newly formed STIL.

STIL "Songs that I like" can be purchased online thru HMV canada and on Jim's website stilmusic.com as well as many retail outlets in the Kelowna area.
