Noble Rot, the label subsidiary of Collectors’ Choice devoted to preserving great early indie-rock albums of the ‘80s and ‘90s, will release three new reissues on January 29: Praying Mantis bv Jim Carroll, Beautiful Thing by Ben Vaughn and What We Had by Wednesday Week. Keeping in Noble Rot’s tradition, the reissues will be packaged in cardboard Digi-Paks with liner notes.

  • Railroad Earth
    With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

    The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

    Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals.     After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

    The Warren Haynes Christmas Jam, an annual event to benefit Habitat for Humanity, brings some of the top musical talent in the world to the beautiful mountain city of Asheville, NC. To open the 2008 New York Guitar Festival, more than 20 artists assembled at the World Financial Center’s Winter Garden to honor the music of Bob Dylan by recreating his famed 1966 "Royal Albert Hall" concert. (The original Dylan show actually took place May 16, 1966, in Manchester, England, not at the Royal Albert Hall in London but has become known as such through many old mislabeled vinyl bootlegs.) From Belle and Sebastian frontman Stevie Jackson to vocal powerhouse Toshi Reagon, the concert featured an eclectic lineup of some of today’s most talented guitarists and vocal standouts. Performing the show in sequence as Dylan did more than 40 years ago, the musicians treated the at-capacity crowd to an unforgettable interpretation of one of music’s most known and storied concerts.

Relief efforts have continued since Katrina but it hasn’t been enough to get the area functioning to full capacity and allow all residents to return to a sense of normalcy and comfort. To help continue the relief effort, Symbiotic Music Productions and Crescendo Artists announce a Mardi Gras Benefit Celebration with the Big Easy Blowout. All proceeds from the events will benefit the New Orleans Musicians Clinic and Tipitina's Foundation.

    Fritz Richmond, who made his home in Portland later in life and is widely considered to have been the finest jug and washtub bass player in the genre, is featured throughout the film. Fritz passed away while "Chasin' Gus' Ghost" was being filmed, and in some ways the film became an ode to Fritz - to his talent and character. He led an illustrious musical life, co-founding the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and performing with Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder and the Grateful Dead. "Fritz was a cultural icon," says Sebastian in the film.

    Every year at Vegoose is a completely different experience. They seem to try so hard to switch it up and bring in acts that you might not anticipate seeing in the same venue. In fact, I think they might try too hard and get themselves into trouble. I’ve never seen so much pre-fest hype as what I’ve witnessed preceding Vegoose the past two years. No one knew what to expect the first year so that wasn’t an issue but this year and in 2006, everybody was all in a tizzy about promises made and promises broken. My advice to those of you who’ve never been but are considering it….ignore all of that. I’ve not had a bad time yet and can’t imagine that I ever will.

Impressed by his uncanny guitar prowess, Frank and Billy tabbed Kimock to round out their Goodman sound and headed to California. Kimock enjoyed stints in the salsa band the Underdogs as well as the Heart of Gold Band, before forming the psychedelic rock ensemble, Zero, in 1984, and was later touted as Jerry Garcia’s “favorite unknown guitar player,” Now, Billy Goodman and Steve Kimock’s journey comes full circle as the two are united onstage once again in this ever-evolving project.

Scott Barbarino has booked them into the Iridium, the premiere Jazz room (on West 51 Street and Broadway) on Tuesday, January 13, which coincides with what would have been Gene Krupa's 100th birthday.

But when the band opened up with Trans Am, an original track off the band’s latest, Moon is the New Earth, the crowd didn’t know what to think. As it would turn out, the change up was so that the band wouldn’t have to pause in the middle of Zeppelin II to play Auld Lang Syne, release the balloons, and watch the happy couples make out on the dance floor. Noble Rot, the label subsidiary of Collectors’ Choice devoted to preserving great early indie-rock albums of the ‘80s and ‘90s, will release three new reissues on January 29: Praying Mantis bv Jim Carroll, Beautiful Thing by Ben Vaughn and What We Had by Wednesday Week. Keeping in Noble Rot’s tradition, the reissues will be packaged in cardboard Digi-Paks with liner notes.

Previous Noble Rot reissues have included Robyn Hitchcock, Grant Lee Buffalo, Hunters & Collectors, The Surf Punks, Martini Ranch, Rodney Crowell’s side project Cicadas, and more.
 
• Wednesday Week – What We Had. Wednesday Week is a long-running Los Angeles-based band anchored by sisters Kristi and Kelly Callan, with members who have included Heidi Rodewald (later in the Negro Problem), David Nolte (The Last, Wondermints, Maria McKee, Davie Allen & the Arrows and David Gray), Dave Provost (The Droogs, Dream Syndicate), and Ilene Markell (7 Deadly 5). The Noble Rot reissue contains not only the band’s 1987 complete Don Dixon-produced album What We Had (originally on Enigma), but TEN bonus tracks including the complete 1983 EP Betsy’s House on WarFrat Records, plus five more songs from the band’s archives. These include an alternate version of “You Wanted Me to Hang Around”; the previously unreleased “All So Clear,” from an obscure Midnight Records holiday compilation; the fan club single “Leopard”; and the title track of 1990’s No Going Back album on the Swedish Spins label. Liner notes are by Los Angeles Times TV critic and Wednesday Week fan/friend Robert Lloyd.
 
• Ben Vaughn – Beautiful Thing. Vaughn is a rock ’n ’roll renaissance man — a artist and songwriter, producer (Arthur Alexander’s acclaimed Lonely Just Like Me, Charlie Feathers), and prolific TV score-smith ( Third Rock from the Sun, That ‘70s Show and Grounded for Life.) The Jersey/Philly boy put himself on the map with the 1986 album The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn and followed up with this 1987 album, Beautiful Thing, cut in a New Jersey garage and originally issued on Restless Records. The album contains such tracks as “She’s a Real Scream” (with the infamous line “Her end justifies the means”), the Gary Usher-like surf sound of “Desert Boots,” “Jerry Lewis in France, “ Clothes Don’t Make The Man,” “Beautiful Thing, “The North Wind Blew,” “Shingaling with Me” and “Gimme Gimme Gimme.”. A nearly forgotten classic, reissued with liner notes by pop scholar Gene Sculatti and quotes from Vaughn himself.
 
• Jim Carroll – Praying Mantis. Those familiar only with the hit “People Who Died” may not realize that Jim Carroll, like Patti Smith and Tom Verlaine, first started performing as a poet in the Lower East Side scene. This 1991 album, originally issued on Giant, takes us to the heart of that scene, St. Mark’s Church on the Bowery, for a series of poems and semi-improvised comic monologues taken from Carroll’s collections. Included are pieces from several collections: “Living at the Movies” (1973), “The Book of Nods” (1986) and “Forced Entries” (1987) as well as a 14-minute improvised rant titled “The Loss of American Innocence.” In other words, something of a greatest hits poetry collection. Liner note writer Kim Cooper, a pop culture writer and blogger, describes his performance as “requiring intense attention that rewards with humor and flashes of subtle, elegant observation.” The album, she notes, “struck a confident note of a nimble artist reinventing himself.”
