Formed under a blanket of thick Colorado snow during the blizzard of 2006, PRAANG returns to Cervantes for a two night stand December 5th and 6th. Featuring Steve Kimock, Jason Hann and Michael Travis from EOTO/String Cheese Incident and Jamie Janover from ZILLA, PRAANG represents a new musical avenue for the four members to travel.   • Railroad Earth
    With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

    The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

    Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."

  • Curious Yellow (August 2003)
    After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

Hit the Pearl Street Mall starting at around 8 pm and treat your eyes to a cornucopia of sights, including the Naked Pumpkin Run (just what it sounds like), the “Anything Goes But Clothes” costume contest at the Lazy Dog, and generally more sexy, sultry, scandalous and skintastic costumes than you could shake your stick at. A mainstay of Boulder’s spooky holiday scene for the past several years is DeVotchKa’s Halloween Extravaganza at the historic Boulder Theater. Looking around the crowd as I entered the theater, I was pleased to see that only a few people were square enough NOT to dress up for the occasion.

Rittmann is also an occasional member of Cheer-Accident and has played with many other avant-music notables including cellist Fred Lonberg-Holm and Rhys Chatham. In March of 2008 Todd recruited a 5-piece band to perform some songs he was working on. The lineup included keyboardist/cornet player Andrea Faught, who also works with Cheer-Accident, and saxophonist/singer Noah Tabakin, who is a member of punk marching band, Mucca Pazza. This early show the group performed was enough to convince Rittmann, Faught and Tabakin that they should continue to make music together and collaborate on some recorded material. These songs have become the album Mother of Curses, which will be released on February 17th on Tizona Records.

Everything has to be right. I have to be on time, in my spot, with everything that I need. I probably acquired these survival skills during ten years of Phish Jedi touring. Wherever it comes from, it is very exciting!

    Mel Martin—composer, arranger, bandleader, saxophonist, flutist—is one of the most versatile and inventive musicians ever to emerge from the San Francisco Bay Area. In his long career, he’s played a part in many of the innovative movements that have emerged from that creative community. He worked and recorded with a number of the progressive rock and Latin bands of the late ’60s and early ’70s, including the Loading Zone, Cold Blood, Azteca, and Boz Scaggs. In 1977 he founded the award-winning Listen, one of the first West Coast jazz-fusion bands. And he’s currently artistic director of Bebop and Beyond, a group he formed in 1983, as well as leading The MEL MARTIN BAND and Big Band, the Tenor Conclave, and the Benny Carter All-Star Tribute Band.

He worked and recorded with a number of the progressive rock and Latin bands of the late ’60s and early ’70s, including the Loading Zone, Cold Blood, Azteca, and Boz Scaggs. In 1977 he founded the award-winning Listen, one of the first West Coast jazz-fusion bands. And he’s currently artistic director of Bebop and Beyond, a group he formed in 1983, as well as leading The MEL MARTIN BAND and Big Band, the Tenor Conclave, and the Benny Carter All-Star Tribute Band.

Rightmire’s epic lung capacity allows him to jam out on the mouth harp with incredible longevity. Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

I’m talking about Umphrey’s McGee, who will be doing a four-night stint along the Front Range later this month, beginning at the Aggie in Fort Collins on the 22nd. From there, UM will be stopping at the Boulder Theater on the 23rd, with back to back gigs in Denver at the Fillmore and Cervantes on the 24th, and a show in Breckenridge on the 25th.

  • New Years Eve: Zeppelin Reborn as Rose Hill Drive
    The promise of hearing Zeppelin II was a deal-maker as well, the kind of rock and roll Rose Hill Drive does best. But when the band opened up with Trans Am, an original track off the band’s latest, Moon is the New Earth, the crowd didn’t know what to think. As it would turn out, the change up was so that the band wouldn’t have to pause in the middle of Zeppelin II to play Auld Lang Syne, release the balloons, and watch the happy couples make out on the dance floor. Good thing too, because once these guys got going, there was no stopping them.

While honing his craft alongside luminaries such as Jane Monheit, Jason Moran and Stefon Harris, he immersed himself in Manhattan’s fiercely competitive music scene, and now appears in clubs such as The Blue Note, Birdland, The Bitter End, The Jazz Standard, The Stone and Sweet Rhythm, performing with jazz greats, like Esperanza Spalding, Clarence Penn, Joel Frahm and Victor Prieto.

Formed under a blanket of thick Colorado snow during the blizzard of 2006, PRAANG returns to Cervantes for a two night stand December 5th and 6th. Featuring Steve Kimock, Jason Hann and Michael Travis from EOTO/String Cheese Incident and Jamie Janover from ZILLA, PRAANG represents a new musical avenue for the four members to travel. Completely improvisational, spontaneous, and unrehearsed, the quartet’s music reflects their fateful existence.

Originally scheduled to be a Kimock, Vega, White and Banyan gig one December night in 2006, plans were dashed as Kimock was the only member not stranded by an infamous blizzard. Making their way to Cervantes later that evening, Hann, Travis and Janover substituted for the stranded band members, and PRAANG was born. Mixing Kimock’s blistering and masterful guitar work, Hann’s perpetual and incessant groovin', Travis’ and Janover’s musical innovation, and Janover’s flurries of hammer dulcimer and percussive embellishment, the quartet is a fresh and exciting project of intricate guitar leads and exotic rhythms.

Steve Kimock, known for his uncanny guitar prowess, leaves his musical mark through his many collaborations. From the Steve Kimock Band to KVMS to his recent work with Billy Goodman, Bob Weir (Ratdog), and Mickey Hart (Rhythm Devils and Mickey Hart Band), Kimock is a true working man’s genre-bending guitarist. Jason Hann and Michael Travis, known primarily for work with String Cheese Incident and their present venture, EOTO, bring a new-groove/electronica/tribal/acid jazz aspect to the PRAANG project. From groovy slap bass to syncopated measures, the two provide the musical backbone to complement Kimock's melodic tapestries. Contributing additional innovative rhythms is Jamie Janover, a true pioneer on the musical scene. Maintaining a rigorous touring schedule with numerous projects and worldly travels, Janover’s percussion skills are unmatched.
