  • Railroad Earth
    With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

    The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

    Armed with new jungle juice, they are warming up and ready to play. They opened up with a latenight show in Atlanta and continued on to Mountain View Jam Festival in North Carolina. Coast to coast, they'll be working their way to SummerCamp, Wakarusa, and High Sierra Music Festival.

    Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."

  • Curious Yellow (August 2003)
    After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

Based entirely on my ability to speak with some eloquence about their music, and my wife’s propensity to take phenomenal pictures, Matt, Twiddle’s manager, invited us to attend their show the following week at The Higher Ground in South Burlington, VT. Having seen the bands strengths and potential at Backwoods Pondfest, we accepted the invitation and took the short ferry ride over from Essex this past Friday night.

    Perhaps the greatest thing about music is that it knows no restraints. Musicians explore this vast territory to varying degrees, and with varying levels of success. Some choose to specify, and others choose to generalize. The term “genre” has less and less significance all the time, obvious when you look at the staggering number of sub-niche’s we need to describe just rock and roll. Alternative, progressive, pop, punk, funk, fusion, indie, etc., etc. Then there are bands like My Morning Jacket, who are none of the above.

Additionally, the show will be a very large voter outreach opportunity for the Pennsylvania Obama campaign, which has already built the largest volunteer-based campaign in Pennsylvania’s history. The campaign has more than 70 field offices and thousands of volunteers preparing for an unprecedented Get Out the Vote operation. There are now more than 1 million more Democrats in the state than Republicans, an increase of 500,000 since 2004.

Over seventy bands played in a mere two days, spread out over five stages and about ten thousand stairs. The previous week on the Front Range had been depressingly cold and rainy, but on Saturday morning as I stood in the will call line to pick up my creds, I really wished I had remembered to bring some sunscreen.

Mere inches away from walking onto the ferry that would take me back to New York; I fielded a call from my incredibly observant wife. “Sonya Kitchell and The Slip are playing tonight at The Higher Ground, not tomorrow.” With a little coercing, I talked the ferry attendant into shuttling my ticket, rather than me, to the opposite shore of Lake Champlain and, an hour later, Laura hopped in the car and we were off to an unexpected night of music. Well, at least that night it was unexpected.

Rightmire’s epic lung capacity allows him to jam out on the mouth harp with incredible longevity. Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

It is this chemistry that is propelling the band to ever greater success.

Fans of Phish have been excited to receive a handful of official show releases over the past year, not to mention a bunch of great downloads and even a DVD concert.  Each one has given the listener a look back at the band at certain periods in their history, and reminds them just how incredible this group was back in the day.
 
Having heard most of them myself, I realized the band took great steps in choosing which shows to release.  The show from May of 1993 recorded in New Hampshire brilliantly captured the group at a time when they were really making a mark for themselves and were on the verge of exploding in popularity.
 
Another release captured the quartet near the end of 1997 in Dayton, Ohio and might be one of the best performances I have heard from the band.  The funky cover of "Psycho Killer" and the soulful flow of "Jesus Just Left Chicago" highlighted that magnificent evening.
 
Shortly after these two shows became available the group released another concert that was recorded during their Europe tour in the summer of '98, specifically at the Lucerna Theater in the city of Prague.  Having finally had time to absorb this show, I would have to say that of all the issues this is the weakest of the bunch.  This is not to say it was an awful performance, but there are moments when the band is flat out sloppy.
 
For example, the opening "Buried Alive" is dragged down and littered with poor guitar playing by Trey Anastasio.  The song was used in many performances as an opener to get the crowd going, but this version failed to do that.  The following "AC/DC Bag" is also sub-par, not quite as energetic as the many times I have heard them play it.
 
Most of the first set in general is pretty weak by Phish standards; however there are a few bright spots in the middle.  An extended and quite funky version of "Ghost" starts off a bit rocky, but really picks up not only in speed but cohesiveness throughout its lengthy jam.  Listening to this a few times I realized this might have been one of the better versions of this dark and spacey tune.
 
From "Ghost" they ride the wave into the Talking Heads' cover "Cities", which begins much faster than normal renditions, but comes about full circle near the middle to its more familiar sound.  It is actually a very cool transition, and proves to be the silver lining in an otherwise choppy set.
 
The second set starts with the staple "Julius", followed by "Meat", then the jam-building "Piper".  These three songs are usually excellent to hear live, but again they lack the usual tightness during this performance.  Yet all is not lost, as the remainder of the show provides some excellent music.
 
A fun version of "Makisupa Policeman" gives way to a fiery, thirteen-minute jam heavy "David Bowie".  The evening concludes with an extended, superb cover of the Rolling Stones' classic "Loving Cup".  I absolute love when Phish covered this tune in concert, and the one displayed here is definitely a gem.
 
I hate to be too critical of Phish, because in my mind they still stand as some of the absolute best live musicians on the planet.  But even the boys in the group would be the first to admit that not every gig was great.  The setlist for this Prague show was full of excellent song choices, but not all of them were performed that well.  However, there are some bright spots that allow me to definitely recommend this concert to release to any real fans looking to hear some of that good old stuff again.
