Phil Ramone is the 'Genius' Behind Anticipated Winter Projects
With the success of Tony Bennett's 'Duets: An American Classic' (Columbia), 'We All Love Ella' (Verve), the corresponding PBS Special 'We Love Ella! A Tribute To The First Lady Of Song' and now the recently released memoir Making Records: The Scenes Behind the Music (Hyperion), one would think 2007 is already the year of Phil Ramone, but there's even more to come from the protean producer. The next four months bring a medley of new music productions for film, stage and CD.

  • Railroad Earth
    With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

    The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

    Armed with new jungle juice, they are warming up and ready to play. They opened up with a latenight show in Atlanta and continued on to Mountain View Jam Festival in North Carolina. Coast to coast, they'll be working their way to SummerCamp, Wakarusa, and High Sierra Music Festival.

    Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."

  • Curious Yellow (August 2003)
    After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

    In the Fall of 2006, itching to release their first live album, Hot Buttered Rum announced that it would be recording a handful of shows for official release. Live in the Northeast (released May 2007) beautifully reveals the true core of live Butter: music that is forceful without being flashy, serious without being stuffy, intricate without being inaccessible, and diverse without being distracting.

    The Senate energy bill passed earlier this year includes a highly objectionable provision sought by the nuclear power industry that seeks to provide taxpayer guarantees of repayment on a potential $50-$100 billion in loans to finance the construction of new nuclear power plants. The proposed "loan guarantees" would protect future investors in the debt obligations of new plants (which can cost $3-5 billion apiece) by ensuring that federal taxpayers would repay the loans if the new nuclear power projects go bust, as many of them did 25 years ago during the first big wave of nuclear reactor construction.

The changes would relax environmental standards for the same mountaintop removal mining operations that, even under the stricter existing buffer rule, have flattened over a half-million acres and buried hundreds of miles of streams. The headwater streams threatened by the rule changes provide valuable habitat and feed larger waters that provide drinking water, fishing and other recreational opportunities.

    Why this four-piece funk band has not literally exploded across the music scene in America like so many WMD's is beyond me, and my only hypothesis can be that like those reclusive targets of Presidential invasion, the damn things are just too hard to find. When they decide to grace the US with their presence, The NMS tend to visit only a handful of locations, saving the bulk of their tour for venues across the pond. Luckily, they have taken to Colorado. Colorado, it seems, is also taking to them.

    The Nebraska Cornhuskers just finished their worst season in more than 50 years. It’s widely expected newly appointed Athletic Director, Dr. Tom Osborne, will fire Nebraska's coach, Bill Callahan tomorrow morning at a press conference at 10:00 AM. There has been plenty of speculation on who will take the new reigns, but many on the internet have penciled in Bo Pelini. Bo is currently the defensive coordinator at LSU, whose defense ranks among the nation's best. Their ties with nature have only grown and as a group, the band has dedicated much time and energy to reducing their carbon footprint and promoting alternative fuel sources. As a heavily touring band, Hot Buttered Rum had to face the tough reality of how a national tour can affect the environment and counter it with a positive change. In response, the band helped to promote the biofuel renaissance, touring the country on recycled vegetable oil and biodiesel as early as 2003. Band members have participated in numerous Renewable Energy and Biofuel conferences, as well as sitting on discussion panels at such renowned music festivals as Bonnaroo and High Sierra.

Rightmire’s epic lung capacity allows him to jam out on the mouth harp with incredible longevity. Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

    Beat Kaestli moved to New York from his native Switzerland, where he was awarded a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music and he received his Master Degree from the Aaron Copland School of Music. While honing his craft alongside luminaries such as Jane Monheit, Jason Moran and Stefon Harris, he immersed himself in Manhattan’s fiercely competitive music scene, and now appears in clubs such as The Blue Note, Birdland, The Bitter End, The Jazz Standard, The Stone and Sweet Rhythm, performing with jazz greats, like Esperanza Spalding, Clarence Penn, Joel Frahm and Victor Prieto.

The result is one of the most quietly ambitious pop albums in ages. Much like Blur fused English pop traditions and contemporary sonics to forge Brit Pop, Harlem Shakes meld the Great American Songbook with unmistakably contemporary textures, creating what one might call "Am Pop." Influences as disparate as the Band, Randy Newman, Carlos Santana and Spank Rock inform the soundscapes, but the vibe is too coherent to be called eclectic.

With the success of Tony Bennett's 'Duets: An American Classic' (Columbia), 'We All Love Ella' (Verve), the corresponding PBS Special 'We Love Ella! A Tribute To The First Lady Of Song' and now the recently released memoir Making Records: The Scenes Behind the Music (Hyperion), one would think 2007 is already the year of Phil Ramone, but there's even more to come from the protean producer. The next four months bring a medley of new music productions for film, stage and CD.

Ramone produced three tracks sung by actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers for this musically narrated drama. Ramone served as the music producer for the concert prior to the films premiere featuring performances by The Berklee College of Music Orchestra and Choir, IMPACT's Charles Mack, cellist Jenn Kuhn, and guitarists Doug Smith and Christ Trapper with Berklee solo vocalists Jennifer Hirsch, and Kevin Ross and solo instrumentalists Alex Han and Alexis Grapsas.

 

*RUFUS WAINWRIGHT 'RUFUS DOES JUDY AT CARNEGIE HALL' OUT DEC 4TH, 2007 ON GEFFEN

Ramone helped Wainwright recreate Judy Garland's famed 1961 Carnegie Hall concert in its entirety on this two disc 27 live track set.

Some of the finest female voices intermingle on this album of Murray's classic songs. Recorded in Los Angeles, Nashville and Toronto, Ramone paired Shania Twain, Martina McBride, Nelly Furtado, Isabelle Boulay, kd lang, Celtic Woman, Carole King, Olivia Newton-John, Emmylou Harris, Jann Arden, Shelby Lynne, Sarah Brightman, Celine Dion, Amy Grant, Indigo Girls, Dawn Langstroth (Anne's daughter) and a previously recorded Dusty Springfield track with Anne.

Lynne explains how she chose Ramone for this homage to country legend Dusty Springfield, "I needed someone who would understand that these songs stand the test of time, and that Dusty Springfield is timeless.... Then one afternoon [my manager] Betty mentioned the guy who would understand me. He would allow me more room in the studio, and not just being the girl singer. He would choose the right band. So, I picked up the phone and called Phil Ramone."

Ramone is currently putting together an all-star lineup for this anticipated and prestigious annual event held in Los Angeles two days before the GRAMMY Awards. Honoring the seventeen-time GRAMMY-winning recording artists Aretha Franklin is sure to produce a regal line up.
