Many musicians who stage their very existence through live art seem to have trouble rolling over that passion into studio projects. The atmosphere changes drastically, and for many can stifle the creative process. However, those who embrace this medium can translate very well and generally reward the listener with real substance.

  • Railroad Earth
    With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

    The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

    Armed with new jungle juice, they are warming up and ready to play. They opened up with a latenight show in Atlanta and continued on to Mountain View Jam Festival in North Carolina. Coast to coast, they'll be working their way to SummerCamp, Wakarusa, and High Sierra Music Festival.

    Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."

  • Curious Yellow (August 2003)
    After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

    Will Bernard has been flying all over the music radar for a number of years. One of the reasons that I see for that is the unique talent of that California jazz guitar sound. Bernard’s guitar is like a breath fresh air. The smooth tone of the jazz hollow body is one of my favorite sounds to hear. When I asked Will at set break who his guitar heroes are, he told me with a smile. The answer that I was waiting for was Wes Montgomery, and that was the second name he mentioned. I recalled a dinner one night in Boulder a few years ago when Brian Jordan from Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe told me that Montgomery was the reason that he picked up the guitar.

Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

Influences as disparate as the Band, Randy Newman, Carlos Santana and Spank Rock inform the soundscapes, but the vibe is too coherent to be called eclectic.

Many musicians who stage their very existence through live art seem to have trouble rolling over that passion into studio projects.  The atmosphere changes drastically, and for many can stifle the creative process.  However, those who embrace this medium can translate very well and generally reward the listener with real substance.

The latter is definitely the case with the latest release by Georgia-based rock outfit Perpetual Groove, entitled LIVELOVEDIE.  These road warriors have gained significant fame through their musically intense and visually stimulating performances.  And although their music is best displayed live, the band obviously enjoys the recording arena which is evident in many of the tracks on this album.

A good handful of songs from LIVELOVEDIE have been road tested over the last year or two, and they are all presented very well on this disc.  Their distinctive blend of psychedelic rock and indie-pop shine best through clean interpretations of “Save For One”, “It Starts Where It Ends”, and the breezy rock ballad “Only Always”.

Powerful musicianship is displayed on the enthusiastic and fiery instrumental trance-jams “Mayday” and the new concert staple “Speed Queen”.  Albert Suttle’s drumming is impassioned on these songs and guides the band in and out of tense climaxes.  Bassist Adam Perry adds substantial texture over Brock Butler’s engaging guitar work to create an unyielding and elevated rock sound. 

What strikes me most on this album is the strong vocal work by Butler.  Due to the audio intensity of their mind-blowing concerts, his voice is sometimes drowned out.  Yet on LIVELOVEDIE, Butler demonstrates a crisp and sharply confident voice that compliments the melodies just beautifully.

This is a well produced and exceptional release by the Georgia foursome.  It shows a maturity in the songwriting and presentation that many short lived bands never possess.  It also proves that indie rock can be beautiful, jam music can enliven the senses, and frankly rock still rules the South.  Thankfully it has these troubadours to help carry that torch.

Following that was one of the few Andy Miller-written tunes, "Dancing with Lula". Always a concert favorite, the crowd really got into and began to show their strength. The Fox Theater had pretty much filled up at this point and you could feel it. The end of "Lula" segued right into "No Place Like a Road", a folk song from the collaborative side project Songs From the Tin Shed by Castino and Yonder Mountain String Band's mandolin phenom, Jeff Austin.

After listening to the mini-album 18 Steps I begun to question Trey Anastasio's choice of track listings for the release Bar 17, his latest studio project distributed this October. There are some real gems here that probably should have made the cut for the major release, and may have been better received choices that some of the sleepers on Bar 17.

On a night where Colorado music fans could have seen G-Love and the Special Sauce, another Zero reunion, and numerous other acts it was exciting to see folks completely pack the Bluebird Theater in Denver to witness the latest incarnation of the Stanton Moore Trio. Before the show began one fan was overheard saying, "This is a big night in D-town!” It was a big night indeed.

As the saying goes, those things worth having don't come easy. Nearly four years in the making due to scheduling conflicts, this album proves to be worth the wait for both Keller and his fans. The sixteen tracks on Dream keep in line with Keller's extraordinary musical ability and songwriting, but gain significant weight with the help of his musical heroes such as Bela Fleck, Victor Wooten, John Scofield, Martin Sexton, Charlie Hunter, Bob Weir, Fareed Haque, The String Cheese Incident, and many more.

Somewhere between space funk and carnival time resides the music of Georgia-based jamband, Perpetual Groove. The current lineup of Brock Butler (guitar/vocals), Adam Perry (bass), Albert Suttle (drums), and Matt McDonald (keys/vocals) exploded onto the live music scene in 2001 and have since gained quite a devoted following. Electrifying performances at festivals such as Wakarusa, 10,000 Lakes, and Bonnaroo have helped spread the word about this fantastic foursome of future rock.

On March 1st the on-and-off again Led Zeppelin tribute band, Bustle in Your Hedgerow, brought their high-energy show to the Bluebird Theater on historic Colfax Avenue in Denver. A handful of fans showed up to hear their favorite Zep tunes, and were rewarded with a musically stunning performance that covered a wide range of the classic rock outfit's catalogue.

The Fox Celebrates 15 Years With Umphrey's McGee (3/15/2007 4:47:04 PM - )
This past week the legendary Fox Theater in Boulder celebrated fifteen years of bringing exceptional music to Colorado. The year was 1992 when Don Strasburg and his associates decided to turn the once rundown movie theater into one of the country's most popular music venues. Since then, such celebrated artists as Willie Nelson, Dave Matthews Band, Phish, Widespread Panic, Sheryl Crow, Radiohead, and Public Enemy have graced the stage with their art and presence.

Normally I am a little skeptical of artists who release albums that are dubbed “B-sides” or “leftover recording material”, because it usually is a feeble attempt to cash in on material that truly is b-grade. However, this is not the case with the release of Umphreys McGee’s The Bottom Half, which happens to boast some beautifully written and energetically recorded tracks from the Chicago-based rock outfit.

Kelly has gone through a host of backing musicians since then with varying success, none as great as the days before the release of Outpost (the last album recorded by the original band members). Nevertheless, as I learned recently at a show in Denver, Sean Kelly and The Samples have persevered and continue to write and record new material while still performing to large, devoted crowds.

The 2007 Winter Carnival at the Fillmore Auditorium was indeed a grand celebration of a band that helped build this venue.
