- Railroad Earth
With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.
- ten2nine
"I hate to break the news to you, but you guy's may have finally put all the pieces together. This new ep is the best work I've heard from you ever! The writing, lyrics and music is superb, the performance is top notch and [Jim Leguilloux's] production gives it a true professional gloss." - Ron Gilmour, Power 104 Kelowna, BC
- Metharia
The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.
- Signal Path
Armed with new jungle juice, they are warming up and ready to play. They opened up with a latenight show in Atlanta and continued on to Mountain View Jam Festival in North Carolina. Coast to coast, they'll be working their way to SummerCamp, Wakarusa, and High Sierra Music Festival.
- T-Band
Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."
- Shanti Groove (September 2003)
Shanti's groove moves along acoustical and electrical lines, combining the voice of jazz and rock with back porch bluegrass and funktified percussion. Bringing their unique sound to venues nationwide, the band provides a musical celebration of the 'groove' kind.
- Kelly's running column
In this column I want to talk to you about Ghent. Ghent is the capital of the province East-Flanders in Belgium, a small country in Europe, and has about 225, 000 inhabitants.

- Curious Yellow (August 2003)
After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band.
The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.
- New Monsoon (June 2003)
Utilizing congas, timbales, tabla, banjo, bongos, Dobro, ghatham, Didgeridoo, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drum kit and keys, the band offers a plethora of textures, rhythms, ideas and moods. New Monsoon absorbs elements of sound indigenous to world culture and incorporates them into a variety of colorful and original rhythmic compositions.
- One Way Rider (May 2003)
"One Way Rider has taken Nashville by storm! It was an honor to have them perform on the Interstate Radio Network a network of over twenty stations that broadcast from Music City and airs nationwide and in Canada. Locally in Nashville, the IRN broadcast on WSM 650 AM, the home of the Grand Ole Opry. The response was great! We cant wait to have them come back on the air and play for us again. It was so good to be with folks that live and love the bluegrass way, truly a blessed family. David and Valerie are a great example of what a family can accomplish together."
- Smokestack (January 2003)
“The quality of playing blew me away. All four guys were stars, but that keyboard player is a superstar. Very Hornsby in his writing and singing, very Medeski with his jams. I have had the CD for a few months, and being a little familiar with the songs impressed me even more.” CanJam News Toronto,
Canada
- The Miltones (December 2002)
Formed in the summer of 2000, the Miltones have already performed over 350 shows in under 28 months. Their high volume of gigs has enabled the band to mature and explore a range of musical directions that make them a formidable artistic act. Simultaneously their music seems to embrace a level of healing and celebration that make them both accessible and fortunate for the audiences they have attracted.
- Ripple (November 2002)
When Ripple started out in an Old Tappan, NJ basement during early 1978, none of us thought we would be discussing the possibilities of playing together for 25 years. But that’s exactly what happened. From the early day’s of playing friends parties (usually when the Parent’s were away) to all the great nightclubs and other interesting venues we’ve performed at during the years, we’ve met some amazing people and formed life long friendships that will long out live the Band.
- Fair To Midland (September 2002)
Brett Stowers and Nathin Seals offer a rhythmic passion that leads the humble gentlemen in their avant-garde sound. The unearthed discord and unconventional cries of frontman Andrew Sudderth infused with guitarist Cliff Campbell's melodic fury tumble into a captivating creation of sonics, cultures, and confusion. Combined with the subtle offering of Matt Langley on keys, FTM glides past the expected boundries and gracefully throws their intense rock harmonies to the flame.
- The Few (July 2002)
"We did it in chunks, whenever he was available," says Burnside. "Living there, and playing in the clubs, it raises your game." The result, an explosive, hooky collection that echoes Burnside's love of the Replacements and fascination with the Cure, is startling from a 22-year-old who took up guitar only three years ago.
- One Cat Left (May 2002)
Pete’s former association with TOM MARSHALL of PHISH led to the band AMFIBIAN. It was here in this situation that Pete found his voice and his motivation..

Belgium is no exception as regards taking initiatives to collect money for South-East Asia, which has been hit by a tsunami on December 26 last year.
At the end of February this year, I was present at a concert in Antwerp (Sportpaleis): “12-12 The Concert”. It was called that way since in Belgium people can deposit money at bank account “000-0000012-12” to support South-East Asia.

- "Giant on the Box" Gentle Giant's DVD, review by Eric J. Haubner
There is a 3 minute short jam that resembles a garage band playing Grunge music. After several listens, a real aficionado might distinguish what it is. For those who prefer a challenge and want to make a guess, do not read the following clue between the brackets {esuohssalgain}. Good luck.

- Spookie Daly Pride
“We’re developing the band to be how live music once was,” Spookie says. “Like Robert Johnson when the only way to hear him was to do so live. Our kind of music is not only based on radio; it’s kind of an underground thing. And our show takes off from the records, like be-bop, where it’s different every time and we rip wide open some of the sections.”

- John Prine Hits The Road
There are very few treasures that arrive with a battered acoustic guitar and open up the windows on basic lives with passion and grace. But when John Prine hits the road, the darkest corners and smallest joys get illuminated by the light of his gravelly, utterly American voice, his way with the plainest of language and the vintage Guild and Martin guitars he plays.
- Railroad Earth
Blessed with an inherent musical connection that cannot be learned, but only nurtured and nourished, Railroad Earth does just that at its over 100 live shows every year. The band’s growing legions of fans complete the live experience, and are so dedicated to crisscrossing the country that they have earned themselves an aptly-termed moniker: hobos.

- 5.8.77 - Cornell University - 28 Years Later...
In particular my favorites are Loser, TLEO, Jack Straw (for its fluidity and perfect groove, how often do you think of this song for its groove?!), BE Women (again for the ease and fluidity of Jerry's playing and the rest of the band not getting in the way), Row Jimmy (some of Jer's best slide work ever!), and Dancin' (finding the non-stop, eternal groove).

- Dark Star Orchestra Provides Fun and Nostalgia in NY
DSO is not just your average Grateful Dead cover band. There is a huge debate in the music world about cover bands and I don’t know what to think, but at the very least it is always fun. Can you really ask for more? Well, yes, but let’s come back to that question after a quick review of their show Wednesday night near Albany in Clifton Park, NY.

“Music…touches the soul…[and] often makes you feel so good about the less than wonderful day we may have had. I can’t believe that any of us that love music can stand by and watch this insanity continue, knowing that we are directly responsible for some really bad days for real families in Iraq.”

As for the Pixies, I thought they were great. Again, I had heard very little of their music before this time, and I was pleasantly surprised. I am familiar with the Breeders’ music, and figured the bassist, Kim Deal, would be worth it. Besides, aren’t all women bass players awesome anyways?

So what happens when someone comes along who plays with that kind of intensity, whose command of the guitar goes beyond chops to something deeper in the soul, who is so tied to his beloved instrument that he's been known to sleep with it and cover it in roses -- and on top of all that, he's from Chicago.

- Turbine Rumbles in the Red Fish
Rightmire’s harmonica is almost certainly the band’s most exciting feature. It functions like a mouth-operated synthesizer, electrified, and run through a huge board of pedals. At times it sounds like a DJ scratch kit, at others it sounds like something from outer space. Sometimes it sounds like a regular harmonica. Rightmire’s epic lung capacity allows him to jam out on the mouth harp with incredible longevity. Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

- New Years Eve: Zeppelin Reborn as Rose Hill Drive
The promise of hearing Zeppelin II was a deal-maker as well, the kind of rock and roll Rose Hill Drive does best. But when the band opened up with Trans Am, an original track off the band’s latest, Moon is the New Earth, the crowd didn’t know what to think. As it would turn out, the change up was so that the band wouldn’t have to pause in the middle of Zeppelin II to play Auld Lang Syne, release the balloons, and watch the happy couples make out on the dance floor. Good thing too, because once these guys got going, there was no stopping them.

- Harlem Shakes To Release Debut LP 'Technicolor Health'
After extensive touring and a bit of schooling, the band got back together with Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen, Passion Pit, White Rabbits) to record their first full-length album, Technicolor Health. The result is one of the most quietly ambitious pop albums in ages. Much like Blur fused English pop traditions and contemporary sonics to forge Brit Pop, Harlem Shakes meld the Great American Songbook with unmistakably contemporary textures, creating what one might call "Am Pop." Influences as disparate as the Band, Randy Newman, Carlos Santana and Spank Rock inform the soundscapes, but the vibe is too coherent to be called eclectic.

- Hot Buttered Rum & The Travelin' McCourys @ Boulder Theater
Hot Buttered Rum, one of the hardest-working and fastest-rising stars in the musical firmament, has become, over the last five years, a group that is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, the band melds blues, folks, bluegrass, jazz, and rock, and the members’ varying degrees of classical training lead them to invest heavily in group composition. The widespread appeal of HBR’s music stems not only from the band’s musical versatility and prolific songwriting, but also from the magnetic chemistry the group creates onstage together. It is this chemistry that is propelling the band to ever greater success.

Dresden Dolls Impaled on Nine Inch Nails: A Visceral Concert Review
“I’m drunk,” I said to my buddy Ross. “Oh, yeah, this is going to be a great show,” he said.
When you’re on Colfax in Denver at 8 o’clock at night, you know you’re going to have a story to tell, or at least get drunk. I was shooting for both. And two hours before Trent Reznor took the stage, the crowd off of Colfax already had proven itself an important, explosive element to the show’s energy and to this story.
On Wednesday, May 4, 2005, Nine Inch Nails performed their second show in a row of the “With Teeth Tour” at the Fillmore Auditorium. Just walking into this sold-out auditorium felt like walking into a classic rock concert, but I placed all of my expectations for the upcoming show on my first Nine Inch Nails concert experience.
I first thrashed to a NIN concert in 1994. On that particular tour, a band of attractively pornographic freaks I had never heard of named Marilyn Manson opened the show. For their first stage act, they freely distributed religious material: the Lord’s good word in the form of pocket-sized Gideon’s stamped with 666 and other satanic verses.
The Jim Rose Circus quickly followed with their circus-show of mayhem and masochism. All of this went down in the buckle of the Bible Belt: Norman, Oklahoma. It was a great, grisly middle finger to the religious conservatives who had tried to smother our youth. Eleven years later, I wondered if tonight’s show could possibly be as entertaining, or vengefully sweet.
Promptly at 8 o’clock, after coming to the realization that I was drunk, The Dresden Dolls took the opening stage. Simultaneously, the auditorium filled with eerie purple light and . . . the musk of cloves? I turned to Ross and said, “Ugh, cloves.” That’s not what I was expecting. “Goths,” he stated, and shrugged. Thankfully, a sweeter, mellower smoke eventually overpowered the stench of cloves.
And who the hell was this band? I found their name elusive. I kept thinking of their name as a possible allusion to the scene in Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughter-house Five where Nazis execute an American POW for stealing porcelain dolls he picked from the rubble of the aftermath of Dresden’s firebombing. At that moment, I decided I liked their name, but I had no idea that I was about to fall in love.
In front of us, Amanda Palmer, the lead singer and keyboardist for The Dresden Dolls, dove into a sensual mutilation of her Kurzweil synth wearing an erotic, black tank-top. The band’s Buster Keatonesque drummer, Brian Viglione, purposefully flailed in a violent silent-film of percussion. I stared in shocked fascination.
As Amanda mimed a frantic sideshow during Brian’s early drum solo, I grabbed Ross and screamed, “This band is awesome!” The audience even hailed them as if they were the headlining band. Then a suddenly animatronic Amanda ticked out their best-known song, “Coin Operated Boy,” bathed in a purple light and a sing-along crowd. Unexpectedly I knew this song, remembered it from some hazy house party.
Before the excitement of their “hit” song faded, a forest of hands sprang up to a guitar riff I didn’t immediately recognize. But then I recognized it, and I found myself singing along to a gratifying cover of Black Sabbath’s War Pigs. The crowd’s singing-in-their-car voices nearly drowned out the band. Then the wicked, white-faced drummer and the beautiful voxgician finished us off with a sweeping lullaby about Amsterdam, and some convivial dancing. Everyone seemed to agree that we were sad to see them go.
I immediately felt the alcohol wearing off and headed for the bathroom. “Earth, Wind, and Fire,” said a man pissing in the sink next to me. “Excuse me?” I said. “Earth, Wind, and Fire, man!” he repeated. “Oh, yeah!” I said, before we headed off to wash our hands in the toilet. Was I at the right show? I couldn’t decide. Afterward, I was relieved to discover that the beer queue was shorter than the bathroom’s, so I was plenty drunk again but the time I swam my way through the crowd back to Ross.
I found Ross excitedly talking to a young couple, anticipating NIN. “It’s hot,” I yelled at them, drinking my beer. “I know,” said the girl, “I almost can’t take it!” I told her, “This crowd’s a sea of writhing flesh like drunken maggots on fresh road kill!” That statement evidently caught the attention of the obligatory nine-foot-tall-guy that always stands beside you at concerts. He said, “You’d better finish that beer before you spill it on me.” “You finish it!” I joked. But then he grabbed my beer, chugged it, the lights blacked out, we sardined with a deafening roar, and Ross vanished.
Nine Inch Nails arose on stage to a background of elongated violet fluorescents and a gut-wrenching boom. The crowd churned and surged forward as hands flew into the air. Trent tore into the first song with nihilistic teeth. I could not think of a word to describe this initial moment of the show, so I had to coin a new one: sedatious. It was totally sedatious. It felt like the discipline of fire and desire. The crowd lost all coherence, melting into an ocean of sweaty emotion.
After the initial introduction by a few songs off the new album, Trent quietly loitered on stage like a cloned emo kid, he himself the godfather of emo. He didn’t introduce his band, which included Alessandro Cortini of Italy’s Modwheelmood, the now veteran NIN drummer Jerome Dillon, the newly added guitarist Aaron North, and A Perfect Circle’s Jeordie White, a.k.a. Twiggy Ramirez of Marilyn Manson. Trent’s only words to the crowd came during this moment. He took pause to listen to the cheers inflating the auditorium, and reflected out loud, “All you fuckin’ people.” I couldn’t decide if that third word was intended as an adjective or a verb. Both meanings felt appropriate.
Even in my drunkenness, I sensed something different about this new NIN. No longer did Trent and company play with an earsplitting, crushing crash. There wasn’t the angst and the anger that once pushed the band to unbearable decibels and rampages of onstage destruction. Their sound seethed with the maturity of adulthood, as if Trent now only pondered his condition in life, rather than raged about it.
I recognized this metamorphosis of identity. The new song Everyday Is Exactly The Same portrayed a philosophy that had shifted from obsessing over emotions to one of acceptance and tolerance. Because of this, I found myself still relating to the music of NIN. While remaining provocative, the music now embraced more self-evaluation than self-loathing. We all had matured together from longhaired high-school groaners to shorthaired corporate moaners. Is NIN edging into the realm of classic rock? Am I getting philosophical at a rock concert? Maybe these things aren’t bad.
But this doesn’t mean the show lacked emotion. Bathed in a single white light, Trent cried a soothing rendition of Something I Can Never Have followed by the mosh-pittiness of Terrible Lie during which I helped pick up my fair share of fallen comrades while indulging in the rampage a bit myself.
The recent radio repeater “The Hand That Feeds” flooded over the crowd like a warm bath of blood. I kept thinking, “Our generation doesn’t bite the hand that feeds; it bites it off!” Then Trent probed the crowd with Closer as everyone leapt as one huge monster. Bodies and water bottles took flight at the same time, which perfectly fed into March Of The Pigs. The crowd’s energy simply prevailed throughout the entire show. But no single song highlighted this indulgence more than Hurt, the musical apex of the concert.
The performance itself was half as good as the show in ‘94. It was in need of more thrashing, crashing, and smashing, but the obvious maturity of the band made this impossible. They didn’t destroy a single instrument on stage and Trent looked like an emo’d G.I. Joe with his ripped biceps and shirt-stretching chest. He’s obviously destroyed his rage in the gym rather than in the studio. And even though this show didn’t produce the “up-yours” to society as it did a decade ago, it still reflected a grim shadow of our still desperate lives.
When the lights came up, everyone mingled in the well-trained expectation of an encore. An encore that never came. I collapsed in exhaustion.
After the show ended, and Ross found me in a drunken, withered haze on the floor, I was left with one more, trite philosophical thought inspired by Trent’s lucid lyrics: “Don’t draw a line between what’s yours and what’s mine. In due time we will all experience the sublime, whether it’s by wine or by your hand or by mine.”
Moan. It was time to get off Colfax and go home.
