Donna Jean & The Tricksters: Coming Full Circle
“Once I got into the Grateful Dead,” Donna recalls, “Jerry actually encouraged me. He said, ‘You need to be writing song to put on a record.’ Which I did. I was greatly encouraged by his encouragement. I really started getting back into songwriting at about that time. I think the first thing I wrote for the Grateful Dead was ‘Sunrise.’ It’s on Terrapin Station. I’ve been writing ever since, growing musically.”

  • Railroad Earth
With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

"I hate to break the news to you, but you guy's may have finally put all the pieces together. This new ep is the best work I've heard from you ever! The writing, lyrics and music is superb, the performance is top notch and [Jim Leguilloux's] production gives it a true professional gloss." - Ron Gilmour, Power 104 Kelowna, BC

The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

  • T-Band
Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."

  •
  • Shanti Groove (September 2003)
Shanti's groove moves along acoustical and electrical lines, combining the voice of jazz and rock with back porch bluegrass and funktified percussion. Bringing their unique sound to venues nationwide, the band provides a musical celebration of the 'groove' kind.

  • Curious Yellow (August 2003)
After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

  • New Monsoon (June 2003)
Utilizing congas, timbales, tabla, banjo, bongos, Dobro, ghatham, Didgeridoo, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drum kit and keys, the band offers a plethora of textures, rhythms, ideas and moods. New Monsoon absorbs elements of sound indigenous to world culture and incorporates them into a variety of colorful and original rhythmic compositions.

  • One Way Rider (May 2003)
"One Way Rider has taken Nashville by storm! It was an honor to have them perform on the Interstate Radio Network a network of over twenty stations that broadcast from Music City and airs nationwide and in Canada. Locally in Nashville, the IRN broadcast on WSM 650 AM, the home of the Grand Ole Opry. The response was great! We cant wait to have them come back on the air and play for us again. It was so good to be with folks that live and love the bluegrass way, truly a blessed family. David and Valerie are a great example of what a family can accomplish together."

  • Smokestack (January 2003)
“The quality of playing blew me away. All four guys were stars, but that keyboard player is a superstar. Very Hornsby in his writing and singing, very Medeski with his jams. I have had the CD for a few months, and being a little familiar with the songs impressed me even more.” CanJam News Toronto, Canada

  • The Miltones (December 2002)
Formed in the summer of 2000, the Miltones have already performed over 350 shows in under 28 months. Their high volume of gigs has enabled the band to mature and explore a range of musical directions that make them a formidable artistic act. Simultaneously their music seems to embrace a level of healing and celebration that make them both accessible and fortunate for the audiences they have attracted.

  • Ripple (November 2002)
When Ripple started out in an Old Tappan, NJ basement during early 1978, none of us thought we would be discussing the possibilities of playing together for 25 years. But that’s exactly what happened. From the early day’s of playing friends parties (usually when the Parent’s were away) to all the great nightclubs and other interesting venues we’ve performed at during the years, we’ve met some amazing people and formed life long friendships that will long out live the Band.

  •
  • Fair To Midland (September 2002)
Brett Stowers and Nathin Seals offer a rhythmic passion that leads the humble gentlemen in their avant-garde sound. The unearthed discord and unconventional cries of frontman Andrew Sudderth infused with guitarist Cliff Campbell's melodic fury tumble into a captivating creation of sonics, cultures, and confusion. Combined with the subtle offering of Matt Langley on keys, FTM glides past the expected boundries and gracefully throws their intense rock harmonies to the flame.

  •
  • The Few (July 2002)
"We did it in chunks, whenever he was available," says Burnside. "Living there, and playing in the clubs, it raises your game." The result, an explosive, hooky collection that echoes Burnside's love of the Replacements and fascination with the Cure, is startling from a 22-year-old who took up guitar only three years ago.

  • New York Guitar Festival Opens to a Packed House
Every other year, some of the world’s most distinctive guitar players gather in New York City to celebrate the New York Guitar Festival with a series of intimate concerts and one-of-a-kind collaborations. To open the 2008 New York Guitar Festival, more than 20 artists assembled at the World Financial Center’s Winter Garden to honor the music of Bob Dylan by recreating his famed 1966 "Royal Albert Hall" concert. (The original Dylan show actually took place May 16, 1966, in Manchester, England, not at the Royal Albert Hall in London but has become known as such through many old mislabeled vinyl bootlegs.) From Belle and Sebastian frontman Stevie Jackson to vocal powerhouse Toshi Reagon, the concert featured an eclectic lineup of some of today’s most talented guitarists and vocal standouts. Performing the show in sequence as Dylan did more than 40 years ago, the musicians treated the at-capacity crowd to an unforgettable interpretation of one of music’s most known and storied concerts.

Fritz Richmond, who made his home in Portland later in life and is widely considered to have been the finest jug and washtub bass player in the genre, is featured throughout the film. He led an illustrious musical life, co-founding the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and performing with Jackson Browne, Ry Cooder and the Grateful Dead. "Fritz was a cultural icon," says Sebastian in the film.

  • State of the Scene: Where Have All the Good Bands Gone?
Wouldn't you rather see and hear a band that follows that formula, versus one that sounds no different live than the CD you just purchased at Wal-Mart a month ago? Again, it all comes down to staying power. Do you really think people will still be talking about Of Montreal, Fall Out Boy, and Panic At The Disco twenty years from now? No one will be talking about how innovative or lasting their music was, is, or will ever be. There are no Zeppelins, Zappas, or Zevons in this mix and that is because these indie rock bands just play down to the listeners churned out, bland rock that is more about what is now, versus what is good.

Every year at Vegoose is a completely different experience. They seem to try so hard to switch it up and bring in acts that you might not anticipate seeing in the same venue. In fact, I think they might try too hard and get themselves into trouble. I’ve never seen so much pre-fest hype as what I’ve witnessed preceding Vegoose the past two years. No one knew what to expect the first year so that wasn’t an issue but this year and in 2006, everybody was all in a tizzy about promises made and promises broken. My advice to those of you who’ve never been but are considering it….ignore all of that. I’ve not had a bad time yet and can’t imagine that I ever will.

  • HAALE RELEASES HER NEW ALBUM, NO CEILING, MARCH 18
Haale (as in halle-lujah, or jale-peno ), is a downtown New Yorker of Iranian descent. On her breathtaking full-length debut, No Ceiling, she draws on that heritage freely, but filters it through a contemporary prism. That is, she extracts the Persian influence of her bloodline — including the work of the mystical poet Rumi — and the Sufi trance tradition, while weaving in her fondness for Hendrix, Dylan, Radiohead, and psychedelia. No Ceiling synthesizes the diverse elements of Haale’s personality into a single, impressive approach. Haale sounds pretty much like who she is.

We've all been there. It is 11:15 at the music club, and the band you have been excited to see for months still has not taken the stage. Show time said 9:00 but you have yet to hear any music. You give a big yawn, and look at your watch again. Nothing.

  • Steve Kimock & Friends Plan String of Bay Area Dates
It was 1974 when The Goodman Brothers plucked Steve Kimock out of his native Pennsylvania to handle axe-work for their folk rock outfit. Impressed by his uncanny guitar prowess, Frank and Billy tabbed Kimock to round out their Goodman sound and headed to California. Kimock enjoyed stints in the salsa band the Underdogs as well as the Heart of Gold Band, before forming the psychedelic rock ensemble, Zero, in 1984, and was later touted as Jerry Garcia’s “favorite unknown guitar player,” Now, Billy Goodman and Steve Kimock’s journey comes full circle as the two are united onstage once again in this ever-evolving project.

  • Madeleine Peyroux at the Scottish Rite Auditorium
My first time seeing Peyroux was at Bonnaroo, but I was disappointed because Jurassic Five was blaring across the grounds making it hard to hear her songs, but seeing her in a small theater was a throwback experience that I won’t forget. Anyone who appreciates jazz and a voice to die for would really enjoy seeing a Madeleine Peyroux show. The only problem is that at this point she is playing very few dates, but keep an eye out for her next tour.

  • Turbine Rumbles in the Red Fish
Rightmire’s harmonica is almost certainly the band’s most exciting feature. It functions like a mouth-operated synthesizer, electrified, and run through a huge board of pedals. At times it sounds like a DJ scratch kit, at others it sounds like something from outer space. Sometimes it sounds like a regular harmonica. Rightmire’s epic lung capacity allows him to jam out on the mouth harp with incredible longevity. Long after most people would have blacked out and fallen over, Rightmire keeps the notes flowing, rocking around like a man possessed. I felt lightheaded just watching.

  • New Years Eve: Zeppelin Reborn as Rose Hill Drive
The promise of hearing Zeppelin II was a deal-maker as well, the kind of rock and roll Rose Hill Drive does best. But when the band opened up with Trans Am, an original track off the band’s latest, Moon is the New Earth, the crowd didn’t know what to think. As it would turn out, the change up was so that the band wouldn’t have to pause in the middle of Zeppelin II to play Auld Lang Syne, release the balloons, and watch the happy couples make out on the dance floor. Good thing too, because once these guys got going, there was no stopping them.

After extensive touring and a bit of schooling, the band got back together with Chris Zane (Les Savy Fav, The Walkmen, Passion Pit, White Rabbits) to record their first full-length album, Technicolor Health. The result is one of the most quietly ambitious pop albums in ages. Much like Blur fused English pop traditions and contemporary sonics to forge Brit Pop, Harlem Shakes meld the Great American Songbook with unmistakably contemporary textures, creating what one might call "Am Pop." Influences as disparate as the Band, Randy Newman, Carlos Santana and Spank Rock inform the soundscapes, but the vibe is too coherent to be called eclectic.

Hot Buttered Rum, one of the hardest-working and fastest-rising stars in the musical firmament, has become, over the last five years, a group that is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, the band melds blues, folks, bluegrass, jazz, and rock, and the members’ varying degrees of classical training lead them to invest heavily in group composition. The widespread appeal of HBR’s music stems not only from the band’s musical versatility and prolific songwriting, but also from the magnetic chemistry the group creates onstage together. It is this chemistry that is propelling the band to ever greater success.

There is something to be said about the marriage of experience and youth. It usually results in wisdom–or at the least a sort of magic. And magic is what seems to be coming from the new band, Donna Jean & the Tricksters. The experience comes from Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, known best for her harmony voice in the Grateful Dead, and keyboardist Mookie Siegel, who has played with the David Nelson Band, Phil & Friends, and RatDog. The youth element resides in Jeff Mattson (lead guitar), Klyph Blank (bass, dobro), Tom Circosta (rhythm guitar) and Dave Diamond (drums, percussion)—all members of Zen Tricksters– and vocalist Wendy Lanter. Their new self-titled album is a fine example of the scope of improvisational music that had its start nearly fifty years ago.

For Donna Jean, though, music started earlier than that in the northeastern community of Florence, Alabama, where she was born. It is also the birthplace of W.C. Handy, the father of the blues, and Sam Phillips, who influenced the rock and roll careers of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Elvis Presley. “We have a rich music history that has just grown and grown and become one of the music capitals of the world,” says Donna Jean. “I’m very proud to have come from here.”

This area is known for the Muscle Shoals sound that came out of two recording studios, FAME (Florence Alabama Music Enterprises) Studios and the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. FAME helped define Aretha Franklin’s signature sound and recorded Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding, while the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio recorded Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Lynard Skynard, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Willie Nelson, the Allman Brothers, and the Rolling Stones.

At the tender age of nine, Donna Jean started writing songs. “When I was 12, I wrote a song and sang it on TV and played the piano in a local talent contest and won the talent contest,” she remembers.  “I’ve been writing songs really all my life.”

Then at fifteen, Donna Jean started singing professionally in those very same star-making studios.  She did backup for Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and also appeared on Boz Scagg’s first solo album, Percy Sledge’s single “When A Man Loves a Woman,” and even Elvis Presley’s single “Suspicious Minds.” “So that is definitely one arm of who I am musically,” she says, “that deep pocket, back beat singing, that Muscle Shoals groove.”

In 1970, she moved to San Francisco where a new musical sound was being formed. She met and married Grateful Dead keyboard player, Keith Godchaux, and spent the decade singing with the Dead and with the Jerry Garcia Band. With drummer Greg Anton, she and Keith formed the band Heart of Gold.

Keith died in a car crash in 1980.  Donna Jean moved back to Florence and later married bassist Dave Mackay. In the 90s, she recorded a new Heart of Gold Band album, At the Table, and started singing with her own band, the Donna Jean Band, and occasionally with Phil & Friends.

Then in 2005 at Gathering of the Vibes, the Zen Tricksters asked Donna Jean if she’d sing a couple of tunes with them. “I had heard of the Zen Tricksters,” she says, “But I had never heard them.  I got to hang out with them backstage.  I just realized, number one, they were really, really cool people, very down to earth, and into making the best music that they could make and as well as they do. My gosh, they’re great musicians!”

Donna Jean ran into them again at a Rex Foundation Benefit that same year. Jeff Mattson started sending her Zen Trickster CDs, and she started sending them music that she had written. “I was blown away by listening to their CDs and realized that they’re not just a Grateful Dead cover band,” she says. “They’ve moved on from that. They write their own songs. They’re great songwriters. So, that really got me thinking about doing more things with them, and they were thinking the same thing as well.”

When they finally did a gig together at the Rex Foundation Black Tie-Dyed Ball in 2006, they were in sync. “Once we got to rehearsal there, I got to see their range as far as what they could play.  They were all very, very broad in their musical knowledge of different genres of music. So when I brought in my stuff, which carried a lot of weight, with that Muscle Shoals back beat, deep pocket groove, they could do that just as well as they could do anything else. I was just way impressed,” Donna Jean says proudly.

Almost three decades ago, the Zen Tricksters formed on Long Island and soon began appearing annually at the Gathering of the Vibes. The band, like many new bands today, is equally comfortable mixing genres and crossing into uncharted territory.  “This band is rich and full with songwriters and singers,” says Donna Jean.  The Zen Tricksters have continued to write and contributed new material to the new Donna Jean & the Tricksters release. Even the drummer, Dave Diamond, brings a couple to the table as well. It’s often unusual to find a drummer who sings, much less one who writes lyrics and melodies.

The Tricksters, however, have the addition of Mookie Siegel’s unique keyboard work and another voice. “Every time I would do a demo of one of the songs I had written,” says Donna Jean, “I would always have this high girl harmony part on it. I was always disappointed I was not hearing that on other musical situations that I was in. So that’s why I asked for Wendy Lanter to come on board as well, and she just fills that bill beautifully. We harmonize beautifully together.  She has been a friend of the Zen Tricksters for years and years. So what we have come up with today is something that we all are very, very proud of.”

What Donna Jean and the band have created is a very vibrant recording that has allowed each member of the group to shine. There is a generosity that is present among all of the band members. This isn’t a Donna Jean showcase, in the sense that she is always out front of the band, putting them second to her voice or her experience. She is able to handle lead vocals masterfully and then step back into the backup vocal position with aplomb.

“That is part of my legacy, and I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Donna Jean remarks. “I am fortunate enough to get to be in a band where I get to do everything I want to do, as well I get to be everything else that I am of a supportive nature. It’s not even like I’m giving up anything. I’m enriched by it. It’s all good.”

And the other band members willingly take up lead vocal duties to suit the song. They also add great deeper harmonies to the mix.

All of the songs on this album are fantastic, but there are several cuts of particular note. One is the Dave Diamond song, “Weight of the World,” that calls the world to peace with an Afro-world beat.  Another is Donna Jean’s pop/soul tune, “Shelter.” The style is surprising coming from an improvisational band, but harkens back to Donna Jean’s Muscle Shoals roots. It is a moody, poetic social consciousness piece that lingers with you long after the song has ended. Then, there’s Jeff Mattson’s “Travelin’ Light” and Keith Godchaux’s  “Farewell Jack.” Both are just fun Deadesque cuts with Donna Jean and Wendy Lanter’s harmonies countered with Trickster vocals on one and Mookie Siegal’s sweet keyboard work on the other.  But my absolute favorite are Tom Circosta’s love song,  “Moments Away,” a haunting, folky, almost gospel tune, and Klyph Black’s “Reno,” a flat-out honky tonk rock tune that is made extra special by Siegal’s flamboyant piano and the energetic backup vocals. “Reno” just ties up the great, good fun of the entire album and leaves you tapping your foot, with a grin on your face.

Could Jerry Garcia have ever asked for more than for a band of another generation to take from his legacy and carry it forward into something totally their own? “That’s exactly what Garcia intended,” says Donna Jean. “He didn’t intend to be a guru himself. He intended to pass on something that other people could incorporate into their lives. I know that he’s smiling about everything that’s taking place now, because it’s what he wanted to happen. He didn’t want it to stop with the Grateful Dead. In fact, he had the opposite approach to even playing music that when it’s heard it does something to people to where they are inclined to not only get it themselves but to pass it on....I’m sure that Jerry would be so amazed that it has carried on like it has.  Even after his death, it’s not less; it’s more.”

And you’ll find that some of that “more” in Donna Jean & the Tricksters. They will be appearing live on World Café on PBS stations across the country on Friday, February 22. That appearance and their official CD Release Party and Benefit for the Rex Foundation at the Knitting Factory the next night will kick off their CD Release Celebration Tour in March and April, which will have them playing throughout the Northeast, making a swing through the deep South, then coming up to through the Midwest as far as Minneapolis.

“I’m just very comfortable with just everything that is going on, both in my personal life and musically,” says Donna Jean. “I’m just being who I am, and I’ve never felt so liberated in my whole life.” Hmmm. Besides the musical magic, there is indeed some deep wisdom here after all.
