Air and Water Guy: Water fighting Bald Faced Hornets
On reflection, This was a foolish attempt by amateurs, and if I did indeed want to attempt another foolish attempt by amateurs, I would do so in the rain, the temperature under 55 Degrees, with a face mask.

  • Railroad Earth
With nearly 400 shows and tens of thousands of road miles now behind them, Railroad Earth has become a staple on the national touring and festival scene, and built a huge following of loyal fans that document and trade every note they play, and often join them on the road for multiple nights. These fans call themselves “Hobos,” and the band considers them to be the fuel that keeps this engine chugging along. Railroad Earth’s next album is planned for release in Spring 2004. Till then the band will continue to bring their music to the stage from East to West. So keep an ear to the ground and listen for Railroad Earth, because they'll be rolling through your town very soon.

"I hate to break the news to you, but you guy's may have finally put all the pieces together. This new ep is the best work I've heard from you ever! The writing, lyrics and music is superb, the performance is top notch and [Jim Leguilloux's] production gives it a true professional gloss." - Ron Gilmour, Power 104 Kelowna, BC

The debut on the band was on 18th January 2000, when Metharia won the festival "Le Quattro Notti Rock." In June 2003 they are one of the three winners of the "NMC festival,' in Marcerta winning the award for the best live performance.

  • T-Band
Jim Dooney plays guitar and does most of the lead vocals. He is great at getting everyone involved in the fun by taking requests or choosing the perfect song for any situation. Amy Anderson plays the stand up bass and sings harmony. Amy is the musical backbone of the band. Her playing punch and solid timing keeps us all together in our all acoustic environment. Robert Griffith plays banjo and sings harmony. Rob drives the band with lightning fast fingers and great improvising skills. Rich Egan plays mandolin and does some vocals. Rich keeps your feet tapping and your fingers snapping with his rhythm chops and is great at playing tasteful solos."

  •
  • Shanti Groove (September 2003)
Shanti's groove moves along acoustical and electrical lines, combining the voice of jazz and rock with back porch bluegrass and funktified percussion. Bringing their unique sound to venues nationwide, the band provides a musical celebration of the 'groove' kind.

  • Curious Yellow (August 2003)
After fronting a couple bands in the mid 90s in California and spending the next several years developing his musical and songwriting talents in Japan and Minneapolis, Adam Lancaster landed in Denver in 2000 and founded the band. The band took on many formations and seemingly endless lineup changes for about a year until the perfect complimentary additions of Gregg Rosenthal (drums), Josh Eckhoff (guitar), and Matt Novack (bass, vocals) created a sound and style beyond what Adam could have hoped for. This new talented group immediately began writing songs and reworking old songs to create music and a performance that attracts and engages every listening audience. The personal and musical bond between each member deepened quickly and the dedication from everyone to develop the band to its fullest possibilities is evident.

  • New Monsoon (June 2003)
Utilizing congas, timbales, tabla, banjo, bongos, Dobro, ghatham, Didgeridoo, electric and acoustic guitars, bass, drum kit and keys, the band offers a plethora of textures, rhythms, ideas and moods. New Monsoon absorbs elements of sound indigenous to world culture and incorporates them into a variety of colorful and original rhythmic compositions.

  • One Way Rider (May 2003)
"One Way Rider has taken Nashville by storm! It was an honor to have them perform on the Interstate Radio Network a network of over twenty stations that broadcast from Music City and airs nationwide and in Canada. Locally in Nashville, the IRN broadcast on WSM 650 AM, the home of the Grand Ole Opry. The response was great! We cant wait to have them come back on the air and play for us again. It was so good to be with folks that live and love the bluegrass way, truly a blessed family. David and Valerie are a great example of what a family can accomplish together."

“The quality of playing blew me away. All four guys were stars, but that keyboard player is a superstar. Very Hornsby in his writing and singing, very Medeski with his jams. I have had the CD for a few months, and being a little familiar with the songs impressed me even more.” CanJam News Toronto, Canada

  • The Miltones (December 2002)
Formed in the summer of 2000, the Miltones have already performed over 350 shows in under 28 months. Their high volume of gigs has enabled the band to mature and explore a range of musical directions that make them a formidable artistic act. Simultaneously their music seems to embrace a level of healing and celebration that make them both accessible and fortunate for the audiences they have attracted.

  • Ripple (November 2002)
When Ripple started out in an Old Tappan, NJ basement during early 1978, none of us thought we would be discussing the possibilities of playing together for 25 years. But that’s exactly what happened. From the early day’s of playing friends parties (usually when the Parent’s were away) to all the great nightclubs and other interesting venues we’ve performed at during the years, we’ve met some amazing people and formed life long friendships that will long out live the Band.

  • Fair To Midland (September 2002)
Brett Stowers and Nathin Seals offer a rhythmic passion that leads the humble gentlemen in their avant-garde sound. The unearthed discord and unconventional cries of frontman Andrew Sudderth infused with guitarist Cliff Campbell's melodic fury tumble into a captivating creation of sonics, cultures, and confusion. Combined with the subtle offering of Matt Langley on keys, FTM glides past the expected boundries and gracefully throws their intense rock harmonies to the flame.

  • The Few (July 2002)
"We did it in chunks, whenever he was available," says Burnside. "Living there, and playing in the clubs, it raises your game." The result, an explosive, hooky collection that echoes Burnside's love of the Replacements and fascination with the Cure, is startling from a 22-year-old who took up guitar only three years ago.

Summer is really thé time for festivals. In Belgium, each year the festival-season starts with Rock Werchter. Rock Werchter 2004 was four days of 80.000 visitors and 61 concerts on two podiums (main stage and pyramid marquee). As each year, the tickets were sold out very soon. In the very nick of time, I had managed to get a one-day-ticket and joint the last day of the festival. I was a bit disappointed, as I couldn’t see Lenny Kravitz, who was performing the day before. But the Sunday-program was great as well.

I thought Michael Travis did an amazing job switching between the keyboards, laptop samples, loops, and guitar/bass. What struck me the most was the live recorded audio he would use. Most of the samples sounded as if he were doing what I know to be a sort of tabla language. And as always Jason Hahn is just a machine! Albeit machine that constantly finds smiles and laughs onstage.

The album closes with arguably it’s strongest moment. Built around a huge, Talking Heads-esque piano rhythm, ‘Hands’ is an extraordinary piece of song writing. Charlie’s almost spoken word delivery is like an anglicized Springsteen, as he talks of finding himself, “on the hard shoulder of the motorway / to my feet I tried to complain / but I don’t think they were listening”, as the song build to almighty crescendo.

My hornet fighting partner, the owner of the home and my brother in law by marriage, heard me begin “Mmmmaaaa” a consonant sound, low and curious. All of this happened incredibly quickly, but in my minds replay remembering the real experience, it seemed slow and deliberate.

Beach Ball sized, alien grey and roughly 30 feet above us in the scrub maple, the nest bobbing now from the stream of hose water I purposely applied to its base for maximum destructive purposes.

I convinced my brother in law by marriage we could do this ourselves, if he was to purchase an extension gutter blow out. To this I screwed the common but effective adjustable brass water sprayer he already had, along with duct tape for connecting the 3’ gutter blowout extension (with the brass sprayer set to power stream) to a long wooden stick he also miraculously had in his garage, a painters 2” diameter round dowel stick at about 13’ long. A Bizarre and cumbersome item for the average consumer to store, hard to reposition inside the garage roof to fit, yet exactly what we needed to firmly extend the reach of pressurized water in the flexible hose.

As evening darkened and our kids were put to sleep, we trained his rear exterior wall house lights upward into the scrub maple hosting the hornet nest.

My brother in law manned the water spigot behind me as I stood on his hot tub cover holding the lower part of the round wooden dowel stick. I stood with my legs apart and instructed him to open the water valve.

In considering the water based destruction of the hornet nest, I weighed my options.  If I aimed for the top, I would simply mud the lower part. By soaking the bottom only, I hoped to ‘halve’ the colony, wide open with its lower half falling down, in the least amount of our exposure time outside as possible.

We had worked out our positioning and escape route: After he turned on the water valve on his exterior house siding, he would remain at the valve and watch for marauding hornets as I concentrated on dowsing the nest with our sprayer. He never announced seeing any hornets as I wet the nest down in the floodlit darkness, but we did both jump just a minute into the attack when a white moth caught the lights. After that, we relaxed a bit, as if we were doing nothing more then extinguishing a campfire, the nest would fall and we could go to sleep, at peace.

What also put us off guard was the lighting, a crude job by us to twist the lone rear house spotlight into the thickly leaved summer scrub maple to indicate nest location. But in the dark of Utah night, the nest remained speckled by tree leaves and hid the water damage well when, indeed, a lower portion of the nest fell away from the pressurized soaking stream of water, exposing the inner open hive. We did not see this happen or recognize the now darker spot of the open hive, and I continued to pulverize the now open and exposed hornet nest with the residential pressure spray of chlorinated water.

What my hornet fighting partner heard me delivering was roughly the same warning low “M” to a wailing “aaaaaaawwwwww” sounds Homo sapiens for thousands of years used instinctively. For those close enough, the low, overland subsonic rumble to wail vibration warned children, mothers, old, everyone:  “Death here, run quickly away.”

My brother in law by marriage ran away before my throat moved to the wail portion of the sound... I had felt a light walking feet on my chin, different I realized too late from the soft return spray of water mist. Surreal and strange enough, these bugs with slippers, to just allow me to warn others with my throats instinctive ‘MMMMM’ sound. Then, as if he had found the right, special soft skin spot for his ass to deliver his precious and life grown stinger, I felt hot lead zig into my lower lip, and brushed three hornets off my chin. I jumped towards the agreed to exit on the east side of his house, where we had propped open his gate just for this get away.

My brother in law was steps ahead of me, we swerved around to the front of the house and under the open garage door, pressing the close garage door button, gasping. He located his main water supply valve downstairs, and turned off all water to the home to stop the open water sprayer I dropped, now spraying violently in the backyard.

Protected (we hoped) inside and behind the glass slider back door, we stared under a quarter inch away at a belly dancing hornet squadron. They splayed themselves against the glass in fury, many swarmed about, and we worried about them finding their way in to our sleeping children's rooms. The wives were not impressed with this project to begin with, now even more angry with the “no flushing or washing” announcement, but to go out there to turn off the spigot in that swarm would be suicide.

These were no mosquitoes in an “OFF” Tent; these Hornets bodies were quivering with fury and a bursting desire to impale their stingers deep into the perpetrators of the mother nest’s attack, or anything with a warm signature in the summer Utah night. We could see the hornet’s details up close, 10 guarded the slider door, many danced around the skyward spotlight. In the air of the backyard, hornets flew and buzzed, patrolling in neat circles for nest attackers.

If we had remained out there, we would have had many, many stings.

Their bodies were zebra colored, with white and black alternating rings beginning in their middle and ending in black at the pointed stinger. The hornet faces were like others I had stared into over my span of time, emotionless, black eyed knobs between featureless porcelain. Only the attached quivering bodies and antenna revealed the anger and intention within.

These Bald Faced Hornets searched the yard catching live pests like Blue Bottle Flies, finding them and ripping them alive in pieces for their pupae, keeping the yard clear of pests and never attacking us except in defense this one night.

After a while their dancing slowed, 4 did not leave the screen all night, and first three, then two remained all night long against the glass. It was a warm night, and immediately we should have turned off the spotlight after the attack, but we stared at them for 5 minutes before turning off the attracting light. We now hoped to cool the bald faced buggers down as quickly as possible, so we could creep out and turn off the spigot. It was a delicate balancing act between the irate hornets and the livid wives, who suspected we were idiots. After an hour in the house darkness, I crept out in a rain poncho, walking around the house from the other direction and unlatched the western back gate, quickly found the spigot and turned it off without seeing or hearing a single hornet.

The Bald Faced Hornets were on the screen the next morning, but by the afternoon we moved about the backyard without incident. They repaired the bottom of the nest within a day, though it took weeks before the beach ball again had its healthy, ‘pressurized’ look. The Bald Faced Hornets are again snug in our tree condo, the ladies now wash and rest with running water, and the question is, do we attack in the fall, during my next visit?

Based on their looks we searched the internet using keywords "hornet" and "black and white." and found these zebra striped hornets were Bald Faced Hornets, though I have never met a “hair faced hornet”. Here are some informative sites:

PS: Lessons learned: Remove hornet nests early in the spring, while it is still cold at night and before it grows too big! The bigger the nest, the more hornets inside.

On reflection, I would have soaked the whole nest less intensely initially, more like a powerful rain, first, for a while. I would apply the water in such a way to fool the hornets into thinking its just rain hitting the ‘roof’. Then, with the nest as wet as possible, I would apply the heavier torrent to the bottom as I did from the start in this example. But to make clear: This was a foolish attempt by amateurs, and if I did indeed want to attempt another foolish attempt by amateurs, I would do so in the rain, with the temperature under 55 Degrees. With a face mask.
